Trump Backs Cuomo, Warns of Cutting Funds if Mamdani Wins New York City Mayoral Race

Post by : Sameer Saifi

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly supported former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for mayor of New York City, warning that he may cut federal funding if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the upcoming election. The statement has created political tension just before voters head to the polls, making this one of the most closely watched city elections in the country.

Trump’s endorsement came as a surprise because Cuomo, a former Democrat, is running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani earlier this year. Trump said he believed Cuomo was the only person capable of leading the city, describing Mamdani as “a communist” and warning that his leadership would harm New York’s economy and safety. Trump posted on his Truth Social account, “Whether you like Andrew Cuomo or not, you have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job.”

Trump’s comments also carried a strong warning for New Yorkers. He said if Mamdani wins, he might reduce federal support for the city. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins, it is highly unlikely I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the minimum required, to my beloved first home,” Trump said, referring to New York City, where he was born and raised.

According to a report from the New York State Comptroller, the federal government currently provides $7.4 billion to New York City, which accounts for about 6.4% of the city’s total budget. This money helps fund housing programs, education, healthcare, and transport. Trump’s threat to reduce this funding has worried local leaders and residents who depend on these public services.

Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assembly member originally from Uganda, has gained strong support from young and progressive voters. He became well-known after defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June. Mamdani’s campaign focuses on affordable housing, higher taxes for the wealthy, and better public transport. He has promised to freeze rent for almost one million apartments and increase support for low-income residents.

In a response to Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo, Mamdani said, “The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo shows that Donald Trump wants a mayor who will serve his interests. They share the same donors and the same small vision.” He also accused both Trump and Cuomo of ignoring the needs of ordinary New Yorkers.

Andrew Cuomo, once one of the most powerful Democrats in the state, resigned as governor in 2021 after a report by the New York Attorney General found that he had sexually harassed several women, including government employees. A later U.S. Justice Department report confirmed that Cuomo had created a hostile work environment for at least 13 women. Despite these controversies, Cuomo has tried to rebuild his image, presenting himself as a leader with experience who can bring stability to the city.

The race between Mamdani, Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has attracted national attention. Mamdani leads most public opinion polls, while Cuomo is in second place and Sliwa trails far behind. Many see the election as a major test of the Democratic Party’s future direction — whether it will move toward Mamdani’s progressive ideas or return to the moderate politics represented by Cuomo.

Trump’s involvement in the race has made it even more dramatic. He has often criticized New York City’s leadership during his presidency, blaming the city’s Democratic leaders for high taxes and rising crime. In his second term, Trump has also threatened funding cuts over several issues, including climate policies, diversity programs, and pro-Palestinian protests.

For Trump, supporting Cuomo may be a strategic move to weaken the Democratic Party’s unity. For Cuomo, Trump’s endorsement could be both a help and a problem. While it might attract some conservative voters, it could also push away Democrats who do not want to be linked with Trump.

Political experts say this election could influence how Americans view both Trump’s leadership and the Democratic Party’s internal divisions. The outcome may also shape how national leaders plan their strategies ahead of the next midterm elections.

As New Yorkers prepare to vote, the atmosphere in the city is charged with tension and excitement. Mamdani’s campaign events are filled with young people calling for social change, while Cuomo’s team promises steady and experienced leadership. Trump’s latest remarks have added another layer of uncertainty, leaving voters to decide what kind of leadership they want for the city’s future.

Whatever the result, this election is not just about New York City — it is a reflection of the larger struggle between progressivism and traditional politics in the United States.
