Air India Searches for New CEO as Safety Concerns Loom

Post by : Saif

Air India is reportedly looking for a new chief executive officer to replace Campbell Wilson, sources familiar with the matter said, as the airline continues to face intense scrutiny following serious safety concerns.

Wilson, who became Air India CEO and managing director in July 2022, was brought in after the airline’s privatisation under the Tata Group. He arrived with over 26 years of experience at Singapore Airlines, holding senior roles at both the flagship carrier and its low-cost arm, Scoot. His tenure at Air India was expected to continue until mid-2027, but recent events have accelerated talks of leadership change.

The airline has been under the spotlight since a tragic crash in June last year killed 260 people, marking one of the deadliest aviation disasters in a decade. Following the crash, regulators highlighted several serious safety lapses, including flying aircraft without proper emergency equipment checks, delays in replacing engine parts, forged maintenance records, and poor management of crew fatigue.

Despite substantial investments by Tata to modernise the fleet and expand routes, Air India’s turnaround has faced several obstacles. Delays in aircraft deliveries and refurbishments, along with operational challenges and safety concerns, have added to mounting pressure on the airline’s leadership. Sources suggest that Tata Group, Air India’s majority owner, was dissatisfied with Wilson’s performance last year even though he had been given significant resources to fix the airline’s issues.

According to reports, N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Air India and the Tata Group, has engaged in discussions with leaders from prominent UK- and U.S.-based international carriers as potential candidates to succeed Wilson. The changes could also extend to Air India Express, the airline’s low-cost subsidiary.

Air India was India’s state carrier before being privatised in 2022, and the airline has been under intense pressure to improve safety standards, operational efficiency, and overall performance. The selection of a new CEO will be closely watched, as it will be crucial to restoring public confidence in the airline and ensuring safer and more reliable operations in the future.

The board and stakeholders now face the critical task of finding a leader capable of navigating these challenges while delivering on the promise of a modern, competitive, and safe Air India.
