Tens of Thousands Protest in Serbia on Anniversary of Deadly Roof Collapse

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly apologized to U.S. President Donald Trump for an anti-tariff advertisement aired in the United States that featured former President Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs. The advertisement, commissioned by Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government, criticized Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum, sparking diplomatic tensions and escalating trade disputes.

Despite Carney advising against airing the ad, it was broadcast during high-profile American events, including the World Series, leading to Trump imposing additional tariffs and suspending trade talks. Carney apologized personally at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, acknowledging the president’s offense and stating the ad was “not something I would have done.”

Trump acknowledged Carney’s apology but remained firm on tariffs, reflecting ongoing challenges in U.S.-Canada trade relations. The controversy revives discussions about Reagan’s trade legacy and highlights the economic and political stakes for both countries. Canada continues to engage in diplomatic efforts while hoping for resumed negotiations in the future.

On November 1, 2025, tens of thousands gathered in Novi Sad, Serbia, to mark the first anniversary of the tragic collapse of the railway station roof that killed 16 people. The disaster exposed government negligence, corruption, and poor construction standards, leading to nationwide protests demanding justice and accountability.

Participants observed 16 minutes of silence—the moment the roof fell—while laying flowers and memorials for the victims. The protests, led by students and opposition groups, called for early elections and a crackdown on corruption, signaling growing public dissatisfaction with President Aleksandar Vučić’s administration.

Despite some indictments, slow legal proceedings have frustrated the public. President Vučić declared a national day of mourning and urged unity. The anniversary protests underline deep social and political unrest and a strong demand for democratic reforms in Serbia.
