Azerbaijan celebrated a major milestone by restarting passenger train services between Baku, the capital, and Aghdam, a city in the Karabakh region. This railway line had been inactive for over 32 years, and its resumption represents a significant step in reconnecting the region and promoting development after years of inactivity.
A Long-Awaited Journey
The first train left Baku Railway Station at 7:10 AM, carrying eager passengers who were excited to travel to Aghdam. The journey covers approximately 371 kilometers and takes about four and a half hours. Previously, traveling this distance by road could take more than eight hours, making this train a much faster and convenient option. The train arrives in Aghdam at 11:53 AM. The return service departs from Aghdam at 6:20 PM and reaches Baku at 10:55 PM.
Passengers on this inaugural journey experienced a historic moment as the long-dormant route was once again active, connecting communities and fostering regional unity.
Modern Trains and Comfortable Travel
The Baku–Aghdam route is now served by modern FLIRT trains built by the Swiss company Stadler. These trains provide higher comfort, safety, and reliability for passengers. Travelers can choose from four classes of service: Standard, Standard+, Business, and First Class, depending on their needs and budget.
Ticket prices are affordable, with shorter trips starting at 12 Azerbaijani manats and the full journey to Aghdam costing 12.80 manats. Each train is equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi, making it convenient for passengers to stay connected throughout their journey.
Aghdam’s Revival and New Terminal
The resumption of train services coincides with the opening of the Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex, a modern transportation hub built to serve both trains and buses. Covering nearly 8 hectares, this terminal is the first of its kind in Azerbaijan and the Karabakh region.
The terminal features a 350-meter-long enclosed railway platform, waiting areas, ticket offices, and other facilities capable of handling up to 1,500 passengers daily. This new infrastructure marks Aghdam’s transformation from a "ghost city" into a growing urban center, reflecting Azerbaijan’s commitment to rebuilding the region after decades of conflict.
Boosting Regional Connectivity and Tourism
The new train service significantly improves connectivity between Baku and the Karabakh region, making travel easier for residents, tourists, and business travelers. It is expected to boost tourism, create new business opportunities, and support economic development in the region.
Plans also include expanding the railway network further. A new line connecting Aghdam to Khankendi is being considered, which would enhance regional integration and make the transportation system more comprehensive.
