Bondi Beach Shooting: Alleged Gunman Charged as Funerals Begin

Post by : Saif

A man accused of opening fire at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration on Sydney's Bondi Beach has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and terrorism, police said on Wednesday. The attack, carried out by a father and son, killed 15 people and injured many others, shocking Australia and raising concerns about antisemitism and violent extremism.

Funerals for the victims began on Wednesday, starting with Rabbi Eli Schlanger, an assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi Synagogue and father of five. Schlanger was known for his work in Sydney’s Jewish community and his visits to prisons and public housing to support Jewish residents.

The accused, Naveed Akram, 24, remains in hospital under heavy police guard. His father, Sajid Akram, 50, was killed by police at the scene. Both men had traveled to the southern Philippines, a region with a history of Islamist militancy, weeks before the attack. Australian authorities said the incident appeared to be inspired by the Islamic State.

The state government of New South Wales has promised urgent reforms to gun laws and protest regulations following the attack. Premier Chris Minns said parliament would return on December 22 to consider reforms, including limits on the number of firearms a person can own and stricter access rules for certain shotguns. The government also plans changes to make it harder to hold large public protests following terror events.

Families of victims and injured first responders praised acts of bravery during the attack. Ahmed al-Ahmed, who disarmed one of the shooters despite being shot, was described as a hero. Police officer Jack Hibbert, 22, lost vision in one eye while trying to protect others. NSW Premier Minns said 23 people remain hospitalized.

Victims included a Holocaust survivor, a young girl named Matilda, and several couples. Community members gathered at Bondi Beach to hold a minute of silence, canceling planned celebrations to honor the victims.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government will work with the Jewish community to eliminate antisemitism and promised sweeping changes to gun laws. Questions remain about how the attackers were able to legally obtain powerful firearms despite previous intelligence checks.

This tragic attack has left Australia in mourning while authorities move to strengthen security and gun laws to prevent similar events in the future.
