Chennai Metro Marks 10 Years with Record Riders and a Greener City Future

Post by : Ramanpreet Kaur

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is getting ready to celebrate a major moment — 10 years of metro services on June 29. Since starting in 2015, the Chennai Metro has become an important part of the city’s transport system, helping more than 39 crore people travel safely and quickly across the city.

In these 10 years, Chennai Metro has made a big difference in reducing traffic on the roads and cutting down pollution. More and more people are choosing the metro over private vehicles, which is great for the environment. In 2024 alone, over 10.5 crore passengers used the Metro — the highest yearly number so far. This shows how people in Chennai are choosing smart, clean, and eco-friendly travel.

The year 2025 is also off to a strong start. Monthly rider numbers show steady use even during the summer:

  • January: 86.99 lakh riders
  • February: 86.65 lakh
  • March: 92.10 lakh
  • April: 87.59 lakh
  • May: 89.09 lakh

These figures show that the Metro is a reliable daily choice for many Chennai residents. It also proves that investments in better public transport are paying off.

To make travel easier and more affordable, CMRL offers a 20% discount on tickets bought through digital platforms like WhatsApp, Paytm, and PhonePe. Passengers can use QR codes for single, return, and group travel. This makes the Metro more convenient and tech-friendly, especially for young people and working professionals.

But the Chennai Metro is more than just numbers — it is about better living. It provides safe, fast, and gender-friendly travel for everyone, and reduces the need for cars and bikes. This means cleaner air, quieter streets, and better traffic flow.

As Chennai continues to grow, the Metro will play an even bigger role. With a focus on comfort, safety, and green transport, it is becoming a key part of Chennai’s journey toward a better, more sustainable future.
