Robot competitions in China have evolved significantly over the past decade, moving from small university events and science projects to major showcases for the country's rapidly expanding robotics industry.
The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games, described as a "Robot Olympics," began in Beijing on Saturday and represents the latest stage in China's effort to demonstrate advances in robotics and artificial intelligence.
China has emerged as a major force in robotics, supported by government investment, a growing manufacturing supply chain and falling component costs.
China's robotics competitions began as relatively small events involving university teams and technology enthusiasts.
Between 1999 and 2014, competitions were largely focused on academic projects. Small wheeled robots competed in activities such as robot football, relying on basic programmed systems to identify objects and avoid collisions.
The sector gained greater national attention in 2015, when Beijing hosted its first World Robot Conference.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously described robotics as a key area of advanced manufacturing, helping establish the industry as an important national technology priority.
Early demonstrations included robots playing badminton and tracking shuttlecocks. While these events attracted large audiences, the technology remained relatively limited compared with today's autonomous humanoid machines.
By 2023, China's World Robot Conference had developed into a major event where established companies could display new technologies and attract investors and consumers.
The focus also increasingly shifted toward China's ability to manufacture robots at lower prices.
Xiaomi's CyberDog became one example of the growing consumer robotics market. The robotic dog was initially launched as a platform for hobbyists and was priced at around $1,500.
That compared with Boston Dynamics' Spot quadruped robot, which was priced at more than $75,000.
The price gap highlighted China's growing advantage in manufacturing efficiency and its ability to bring advanced robotic products to market at lower costs.
China's humanoid robotics industry has made particularly visible progress since 2025.
In April 2025, humanoid robots participated alongside human runners in what was described as the world's first robot half-marathon in Beijing.
The event exposed the limitations of the technology at the time. Engineers had to run alongside many of the robots in case they fell or malfunctioned. Some machines collapsed shortly after the race began, while others crashed into barriers.
A year later, the performance was dramatically different.
During the second Beijing robot half-marathon, a Unitree H1 humanoid robot completed the final stretch without a human chaperone.
More than 100 robot teams entered the 2026 competition, with 47 reportedly completing the course.
One of the most notable performances came from "Flash," a humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor. It completed the half-marathon autonomously in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
Analysts and industry executives have linked China's rapid progress to a combination of technological development, government support and an increasingly competitive domestic supply chain.
Component prices have fallen while manufacturers have become more capable of producing motors, sensors, batteries and other robotic systems at scale.
Government policy has also played a major role.
A five-year robotics development plan introduced by Beijing in 2021 promised subsidies, research tax incentives and financing support for the industry. The plan set an objective of making China a major global centre for robotics innovation.
These policies have helped create an environment where companies can develop and test increasingly sophisticated machines.

The latest World Humanoid Robot Games are moving beyond races and entertainment-focused demonstrations.
In 2026, robotic hands have been added as a major competition category. Machines are being assessed on their ability to perform precision tasks such as tightening screws, opening bottles and picking up small objects using tweezers.
Engineers consider robotic hands one of the most difficult components to develop because they must combine speed, accuracy, flexibility and sensitivity.
The shift reflects a broader challenge facing China's robotics industry: proving that humanoid robots can move from impressive demonstrations and prototypes to practical machines capable of performing useful work.
China's robot competitions now serve a purpose beyond entertainment.
They provide companies with opportunities to demonstrate how their machines perform in real-world conditions while giving researchers a platform to test new technologies.
As competition increases among robotics manufacturers, companies are under pressure to show that their machines can operate reliably outside laboratories.
China's decade-long development of robot competitions therefore reflects the broader transformation of its robotics sector — from university science projects to a strategic industry seeking commercial applications and global leadership.
