Digitisation Key to Making India a Global Aerospace Manufacturing Hub

Post by : Avinab Raana

Tata Advanced Systems (TAS) Chairman Banmali Agarwala has emphasized the critical role of digitisation in scaling up India's aerospace industry and positioning the country as a global manufacturing hub. Speaking at a symposium organized by the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM), Agarwala highlighted the necessity for Indian firms to adopt digital technologies and enhance their capacity to absorb and build upon global technological advancements.

Agarwala pointed out that much of India’s aerospace sector remains largely undigitised, with many companies still relying on traditional paper-based drawings and outdated platforms. He stressed that merely producing prototypes is insufficient; to establish a robust manufacturing base, India must focus on scaling up production processes. Digitisation, he argued, is essential for streamlining operations and improving efficiency across the supply chain.

He further emphasized the importance of technology absorption. While India has made notable strides in acquiring global technologies, Agarwala noted that the country must enhance its ability to adapt and innovate upon these technologies domestically. This approach would reduce dependency on external sources and foster indigenous technological development, which is crucial for long-term sustainability and competitiveness in the global aerospace sector.

Agarwala also highlighted that digital transformation is not merely a matter of convenience but a strategic imperative. By integrating advanced software tools, digital twins, and simulation technologies into design and manufacturing processes, aerospace companies can significantly reduce development cycles, optimise resource allocation, and maintain high-quality standards. This digitisation, he noted, would help Indian manufacturers align with global best practices and compete effectively on the international stage.

The call for digitisation and technological self-reliance aligns closely with India's broader "Make in India" initiative, which seeks to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. By investing in digital infrastructure and fostering innovation, India can strengthen its position in the global aerospace market, attract foreign investments, and create high-skilled employment opportunities across engineering, research, and production domains.

Agarwala stressed that fostering collaboration between private industry and government agencies is equally vital. Encouraging partnerships, providing incentives for digital adoption, and creating regulatory frameworks that support innovation will ensure that India’s aerospace sector can scale efficiently. He noted that workforce training in digital tools and modern manufacturing practices is essential to fully leverage the benefits of digitisation.

The TAS chief also underlined that innovation should not be limited to high-end technology alone but extend across the supply chain. Small and medium enterprises supplying components for aircraft and related systems must also embrace digitalisation to ensure efficiency, traceability, and consistency in quality. Agarwala highlighted that a fully digitised ecosystem would allow for better integration between manufacturers, suppliers, and customers, creating a more resilient and responsive aerospace industry.

In conclusion, Agarwala’s remarks underscore the necessity for India to embrace digital transformation and strengthen its technological capabilities to become a formidable player in the global aerospace industry. Achieving this vision will require concerted efforts from both the government and private sector to invest in digital technologies, foster innovation, and build a resilient, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem. For India to scale up production and meet rising global demand, digitisation is no longer optional—it is the cornerstone of competitiveness and sustainable growth in the aerospace sector.
