Foundation Stone Laid by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, laid the foundation stone for the Dubai Metro Blue Line — a major step in making public travel easier across the city.
The new Blue Line will be 30 kilometers long with 14 stations, connecting 9 busy areas where over 1 million people are expected to live by 2040. This line is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to improve how people live and move around in the city.
A Station Like No Other
Sheikh Mohammed also approved the stunning design of the Emaar Properties Station, which will be the highest metro station in the world, standing 74 metres tall. The design comes from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a famous American company behind iconic buildings like Burj Khalifa, Olympic Tower (New York), and the Sears Tower (Chicago).
This station, which looks like a grand gateway, is designed to welcome up to 160,000 people daily, with around 70,000 passengers expected by 2040. It will be built over an 11,000 square metre area and offer a smooth travel experience and beautiful views.
Growing Bigger Every Year
The Dubai Metro began on September 9, 2009, and has carried over 2.5 billion passengers up to the end of 2024. In 2024 alone, it had an average of 900,000 riders every day.
The number of people using the metro keeps growing. From 38 million in 2010, it jumped to 260 million in 2023 and 275 million in 2024. It's expected to reach 300 million in 2026 and 320 million by 2031.
More Stations, More Trains
Dubai Metro started with just 10 stations in 2009. By 2021, this grew to 64 stations. With the new Blue Line, the number will go up to 78 stations. The number of trains will also increase to 168, including 157 Metro and 11 Tram trains.
What is the Blue Line?
The Blue Line will connect the Green Line at Creek Station and the Red Line at Centrepoint Station, linking residential, business, and university areas. The route includes:
The Blue Line will offer direct travel between Dubai International Airport and places like Mirdif, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Dubai Festival City, and Dubai Creek Harbour — in just 20 minutes.
This helps reduce traffic and supports the Dubai 2040 plan to make the city smarter, faster, and greener.
Stunning Architecture with a Local Touch
The Emaar Station will shine like a beacon at night and stay cool in the day using smart natural lighting. The station uses stone, bronze, and glass to give it a luxurious and timeless look, mixing heritage and modern design.
Inside, the station is decorated with warm colors and strong materials, making it both beautiful and durable. It is also built to the highest green building standards.
Big Boost for Dubai's Growth
This project will help Dubai grow even faster. It is expected to save money, cut down on traffic accidents, reduce fuel use, and help the environment by cutting carbon emissions.
By 2040, it will return AED 2.60 in value for every AED 1 spent, with over AED 56.5 billion in total benefits.
The Blue Line is also expected to raise land and property values near its stations by 25%, making it a smart move for both the city and investors.
Metro Becomes the Backbone of the City
Since its launch, the Dubai Metro has become the heart of public transport, carrying almost 60% of all public transport passengers. It played a big role in big events like Expo 2020, and it helps residents and tourists move around easily and safely — with a 99.7% on-time rate.
Once completed, the Blue Line will be part of a 131 km-long railway network, making Dubai’s public transport among the best in the world.
