Passengers in parts of the East of England are being warned of significant train disruptions this weekend as planned signalling upgrade work takes place.
A large section of the railway south of Peterborough will be closed from Saturday to Sunday while in-cab digital signalling is installed under the £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP). The upgrades are designed to make journeys greener, safer, and more reliable.
Replacement coaches will operate between Peterborough and Bedford, allowing passengers to connect with services to London St Pancras.
Additional works over the weekend include track renewal at Letchworth Garden City, rerailing at Welwyn and Wymondley, and drainage improvements at Stevenage. Some train services will not operate, while others will run with amended schedules.
No trains will run between Potters Bar and Peterborough/Royston or Hertford North and Stevenage. Furthermore, before 09:40 BST on Sunday, buses will replace trains between Finsbury Park and Stevenage via Hertford North.
Ricky Barsby, Network Rail’s head of access integration for ECDP, said the work, which includes further testing, is part of preparations for introducing digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line. He added that essential maintenance is also being carried out at other locations along the route.
