June 25, 2025 | Abu Dhabi — Etihad Airways is setting a new standard in narrowbody aviation, unveiling plans to equip its upcoming Airbus A321LR fleet with interior features that echo the luxury of its long-haul widebody aircraft—including a dedicated First Class cabin.

In a move poised to blur the traditional lines between single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft, Etihad will introduce First Class suites, a full Business Class cabin, and economy seating enhanced with modernized amenities aboard its long-range A321LR jets. The shift signals a bold reimagining of how airlines can deploy narrowbody aircraft on premium, medium-haul routes without compromising passenger comfort.

Etihad’s executive team confirmed to FlightGlobal that the carrier will begin taking delivery of eight Airbus A321LR aircraft starting in 2025, with the interiors mirroring elements from the airline’s flagship widebody products—particularly the luxurious design ethos introduced on its new A350 and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner cabins.

Traditionally, narrowbody aircraft have been associated with short-haul, low-cost operations. But the A321LR (Long Range), with its extended range capabilities of up to 4,000 nautical miles, is increasingly being deployed for thinner long-haul routes where widebodies might not be viable. Etihad, however, is taking it a step further by infusing its single-aisle aircraft with a premium-heavy layout, a decision that underscores its intent to redefine luxury travel on narrowbodies.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, emphasized that the new cabins would “deliver a consistent and elevated experience across the network.” He added that the A321LRs would serve key markets in the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Eastern Europe, and select Southeast Asian destinations—routes that demand premium products without widebody capacity.

What to Expect Onboard

  • First Class Suites: Inspired by Etihad’s A350 and Dreamliner First Class, the narrowbody version will feature enclosed suites with lie-flat beds, privacy doors, large entertainment screens, and personalized service.
  • Business Class: Full-flat seats with direct aisle access in a staggered configuration, tailored for frequent flyers and business travelers.
  • Economy Class: Ergonomic seating, USB-C power, Bluetooth audio compatibility, and redesigned lighting for cabin wellness.

Sources within the airline also confirmed that Etihad is collaborating with leading design firms and technology providers to enhance inflight connectivity, personalized entertainment, and ambient comfort systems in these aircraft.

With this initiative, Etihad joins a small but growing list of global carriers—such as JetBlue and Turkish Airlines—that are experimenting with premium narrowbody layouts. However, Etihad is among the first Gulf carriers to introduce a First Class cabin on a single-aisle aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to high-end service even on shorter routes.

Aviation analysts view this move as strategically smart. “Etihad is capitalizing on a market gap,” says aviation consultant Marc Sinclair. “As demand for point-to-point travel grows and passengers increasingly expect long-haul comforts even on medium-haul routes, the A321LR allows airlines to meet those expectations efficiently.”

Etihad has also reiterated its commitment to sustainability, stating that the A321LR will contribute to its fleet renewal efforts, offering 25% lower fuel burn and emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. This aligns with Etihad’s broader "Greenliner" and "Sustainable50" initiatives, which promote responsible growth without sacrificing passenger experience.
