The European Union's parliament is set to vote on a plan that would help women from countries with strict abortion laws access procedures in other EU nations free of charge. The initiative, called "My Voice, My Choice," proposes using EU funds to cover costs for women from countries with near-total bans, such as Malta and Poland, as well as places where abortion is difficult to access like Italy and Croatia.
Supporters of the plan say it will reduce unsafe abortions and help women who do not have the money to travel abroad for medical care. Isabel Stabile, a doctor from Malta who campaigned for the initiative, said, "It would place us on equal grounds as other European citizens."
Across Europe, the trend has been toward more abortion access. The UK recently decriminalized abortion, and France made it a constitutional right. However, the rise of far-right parties in several countries has challenged this trend, as many of these parties oppose abortion on moral or religious grounds.
Critics, including far-right and some center-right members of the European Parliament, argue that the plan interferes with national laws and traditional Christian values. Elisabeth Dieringer of the Patriots for Europe group said, "Sending women to countries that are more liberal is an attack on national order. This ideological abuse of power is something that we will not accept at EU level."
The vote is expected soon after midday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and analysts believe the proposal has a strong chance of passing. If approved, the European Commission will have until March to decide whether to adopt the plan.
Opponents have organized lobbying events and conferences in Strasbourg, supported by groups such as One of Us and the European Centre for Law and Justice. These organizations have campaigned against the plan, promoting support for maternity and family services rather than abortion access.
Proponents hope the initiative will make abortion safer and more equitable for women across Europe, ensuring that legal restrictions in some countries do not prevent women from receiving medical care they need.
