Military forces from France and Germany have arrived in Greenland as Denmark and its allies prepare for exercises to assure U.S. President Donald Trump over security concerns. The move comes amid Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, a strategically located and mineral-rich island.
Trump has repeatedly said Greenland is vital to U.S. security and that the country must own it to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence in the Arctic. He also claims Denmark cannot fully protect the island on its own.
Denmark and Greenland have strongly rejected any suggestion of selling the island, calling threats of force reckless. European countries, including Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway, have expressed support for Denmark, warning that a U.S. military takeover could threaten NATO’s unity.
To respond to the growing tensions, Denmark and Greenland have started increasing their military presence around the island. NATO allies are closely involved in this build-up, which includes exercises aimed at improving Arctic defense and surveillance. French and German military personnel were among the first to arrive in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. The German Armed Forces sent a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel aboard an Airbus A400M, while France confirmed additional troops would follow.
Experts say the deployment sends two messages to the U.S. First, it is a deterrent, signaling that European allies are ready to defend Greenland. Second, it shows that Denmark and its partners are serious about taking measures to enhance sovereignty and security in the Arctic region.
During talks at the White House, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenlandic leader Vivian Motzfeldt. Both sides agreed to form a working group to discuss security and other concerns about the island. However, Washington has not changed its stance that it seeks to acquire Greenland, a position seen as an unacceptable breach of sovereignty by Denmark and Greenland.
The military exercises are meant to demonstrate Europe’s commitment to Arctic security and to show the United States that NATO and European nations are prepared to respond to regional threats. France’s ambassador to the Poles said the deployment would signal the EU’s role in ensuring Greenland’s security and supporting Denmark’s efforts to monitor and defend the island.
The situation highlights the growing strategic importance of Greenland in global politics. With U.S. ambitions, European defense initiatives, and Arctic resources at stake, Greenland has become a focal point in a complex game of international security and diplomacy.
