Ancona, Italy — In a proud moment for Italian shipbuilding and global luxury travel, renowned shipbuilder Fincantieri has officially delivered the Viking Vela, a state-of-the-art ocean cruise ship, to the Norwegian cruise company Viking. The delivery ceremony, held at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, marks the latest addition to Viking’s acclaimed ocean fleet and underscores Fincantieri’s leadership in building next-generation cruise vessels.
The Viking Vela is the first of six new ocean ships ordered by Viking and built by Fincantieri, one of Europe’s premier shipbuilding groups. Measuring approximately 229 meters in length and weighing 54,300 gross tons, the vessel is designed to host 930 guests in 465 spacious staterooms—each with its own private veranda. The ship reflects Viking’s signature blend of understated elegance, Scandinavian design, and technological innovation.
What sets Viking Vela apart is not just its aesthetics, but its eco-conscious engineering and guest-first philosophy. It features advanced environmental systems that align with IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations, including an energy-efficient hull, exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), and wastewater treatment technologies that reduce the ship’s environmental footprint. Fincantieri and Viking emphasized that this aligns with their shared commitment to sustainability in the cruise industry.
Built during a period of rising demand for premium ocean cruising, Viking Vela is aimed at discerning travelers seeking immersive cultural experiences, refined hospitality, and serene onboard atmospheres. The ship includes multiple dining venues, curated libraries, wellness centers, and outdoor lounges, along with Viking’s signature Wintergarden and infinity pool.
The collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking has produced an impressive fleet since 2015. With Viking Vela, Viking now operates 10 identical ocean ships, each praised for their sleek design, small-ship intimacy, and destination-focused itineraries. Fincantieri has stated that more vessels from the series are already under construction and will be delivered in the coming years.
At the delivery ceremony, executives from both companies praised the longstanding partnership. Viking’s Chairman, Torstein Hagen, described the ship as “a continuation of our promise to deliver quiet luxury and cultural enrichment to our guests,” while Fincantieri's leadership commended the project’s quality, safety record, and on-time execution.
As Viking Vela prepares for its maiden voyage later this year, the cruise industry continues its strong post-pandemic rebound. Demand for small- to mid-sized, destination-rich cruises has surged, and Viking is positioning itself as a market leader in that space. With an experienced crew, elegant interiors, and reliable Italian craftsmanship beneath its decks, Viking Vela is expected to uphold the high standards that guests around the world associate with the brand.
