Flight services at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were disrupted on Friday morning after a technical problem affected the Air Traffic Control system. This airport is one of the busiest in the world, and the issue caused many flights to be delayed, leading to long waiting times for passengers.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said the problem came from the Automatic Message Switching System, which helps Air Traffic Control exchange flight information. Because of this issue, controllers had to process flight plans manually. This slowed down operations and caused delays, especially for flights that were scheduled to take off.
Major airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet confirmed that their flights were affected. IndiGo said that flights in Delhi and other northern regions were impacted. Many passengers waiting at the airport reported long queues and confusion as departure boards showed repeated delays.
According to information shared by airport sources, around 70 to 80 departing flights were delayed by more than 30 minutes on Friday. On Thursday, about 25 flights were also affected by the same issue. Data from flight tracking websites showed that the average delay for departing flights was around 55 minutes. Some international flights were delayed even longer, such as a flight to Rome that was delayed by almost two hours, and a flight to London that was delayed by more than an hour.
While take-offs were disrupted, aircraft were still allowed to land. However, the Air Traffic Control authorities have not given airlines a clear time for when the system will be fully fixed. Technical teams are working to repair the problem as quickly as possible.
Delhi airport usually handles 60 to 70 aircraft movements every hour, and delays can quickly add up. With nearly 78 million passengers passing through the airport in 2024, even a small disruption can affect thousands of travelers. Many passengers expressed frustration, saying they were not given enough information about when their flights would depart.
This incident shows how important technology is in managing modern airports. A single technical issue can cause widespread delays and inconvenience to both airlines and passengers. It also highlights the need for strong backup systems and quick response teams to avoid major disruptions.
For now, passengers are being advised to check airline updates, arrive early, and stay prepared for possible delays while the system is being restored. The situation is being monitored closely, and authorities say they are working to return operations to normal soon.
