Ford Motor Company is intensifying its efforts to compete with China's electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers by developing a new, low-cost EV platform aimed at achieving cost parity with leading Chinese EV models. The initiative is spearheaded by Ford's Advanced Electric Vehicle Program, often referred to as the "Skunk Works" team, which has expanded to include approximately 500 engineers across multiple locations. Lisa Drake, Ford's Vice President of EV Programs, revealed that the new platform will support a diverse lineup of vehicles, including pickups, crossovers, and potentially sedans, with the first model—a mid-sized pickup—expected to launch in 2027. Limited (CATL), a leading global battery manufacturer. LFP batteries are known for their cost-effectiveness and safety advantages, making them a suitable choice for Ford's cost-reduction objectives. However, the success of this initiative is contingent upon securing U.S. federal tax credits, which are crucial to offset the significant investment required for the new battery cell plant in Michigan.
