Ford Raises 2026 Profit Outlook as Strong Truck Demand Boosts Earnings

Post by : Saif

Ford Motor has raised its 2026 profit outlook for the second time this year after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings, supported by resilient demand for its high-margin pickup trucks despite ongoing tariff pressures.

The updated guidance follows a similar move by rival General Motors and reflects continued strength in demand from higher-income vehicle buyers.

Higher Profit Forecast

Ford now expects earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to range between $10 billion and $11 billion for 2026.

The company had previously projected annual EBIT of $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion, after initially forecasting $8 billion to $10 billion at the beginning of the year.

Strong Truck Sales Support Results

The automaker said demand for its gasoline-powered pickup trucks and SUVs remained strong, helping offset rising production costs and import tariffs.

Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley has repeatedly emphasized improving efficiency in the company's core truck and SUV business, which remains its primary source of profits.

Company executives said resilient consumer demand, particularly among higher-income buyers, continued to support vehicle sales despite broader economic uncertainty.

Quarterly Earnings Beat Expectations

  • Adjusted earnings per share: 42 cents, above analysts' estimate of 35 cents.
  • Adjusted operating profit (EBIT): $2.5 billion, up nearly 20% from a year earlier.
  • Revenue: $48.3 billion, down 3.8% year-on-year.
  • Net loss: $1.3 billion, largely due to a one-time charge related to ending its battery joint venture with SK On.

Following the results, Ford shares rose more than 5% in after-hours trading.

Tariff Costs Remain a Challenge

The company said higher tariffs continued to affect production costs, particularly after supply disruptions involving aluminum supplier Novelis.

However, Ford expects tariff-related costs for the full year to be slightly below its earlier estimate of about $1 billion, helped by recovering supply chains and strong customer demand.

Electric Vehicle Business Still Under Pressure

While Ford's traditional vehicle business remained profitable, its electric vehicle division continued to face challenges.

The company reported:

  • 57.4% decline in U.S. electric vehicle sales during the first half of 2026.
  • $919 million loss in its EV and software business during the second quarter.
  • Expected annual losses of around $4 billion for the EV segment.

Despite these setbacks, Ford confirmed plans to begin production of a $30,000 electric pickup truck at its Kentucky facility in 2027.

Expanding Global EV Partnerships

Ford is also strengthening partnerships to expand electric vehicle production globally.

The company recently announced a joint venture with Geely to manufacture vehicles at its Valencia plant in Spain. The collaboration includes new electric SUVs and a jointly developed multi-energy crossover vehicle while continuing production of the Kuga plug-in hybrid and a new Bronco SUV.
