Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney Dies at 84

Post by : Sameer Saifi

Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful vice presidents in American history and a key figure behind the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, has died at the age of 84. His family confirmed on Tuesday that he passed away Monday night due to complications from pneumonia and heart disease.

Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, was a major player in Washington politics for decades. Before becoming vice president, he served as a congressman and later as Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush. In that role, he helped lead the U.S. military campaign in the 1991 Gulf War.

When George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, Cheney was chosen as his running mate. The Bush-Cheney ticket won, and Cheney served two terms as vice president from 2001 to 2009. During that time, he pushed for a stronger presidency and played a central role in shaping U.S. policies on national security and foreign affairs, especially after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Cheney was known for his strong support of the Iraq War, arguing that removing Saddam Hussein from power was necessary for global security. His influence on defense and intelligence decisions made him one of the most dominant vice presidents in U.S. history.

Throughout his life, Cheney battled serious heart problems. He suffered his first heart attack at age 37 and had several more over the years. In 2012, he received a heart transplant that extended his life.

His daughter, Liz Cheney, followed in his political footsteps, becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. However, she lost her seat after opposing former President Donald Trump and voting to impeach him after the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Dick Cheney leaves behind a long and complex legacy marked by his leadership, firm political beliefs, and deep involvement in some of the most defining moments of modern American history.
