In a big boost to Haryana’s public transport infrastructure, the much-awaited Gurugram Metro expansion has crossed a critical milestone: the General Consultant (GC) contract for the new 28.5 km metro corridor has officially been awarded. This marks the beginning of the formal rollout of the first major metro project entirely within Gurugram city limits, aiming to ease traffic congestion and bring metro connectivity to previously underserved areas.
The contract has been awarded to a consortium led by SYSTRA, a globally renowned infrastructure engineering firm, alongside Egis Rail and Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC). These firms bring a wealth of experience in metro, high-speed rail, and multimodal urban transport systems, both in India and internationally.
The awarding of the GC contract is a key step toward implementing the Gurugram Metro Phase-I project, which has been in the planning pipeline for years. The corridor, which will span 28.5 kilometers with 27 stations, is expected to transform daily commuting for lakhs of people in one of India’s most densely developed urban centers.
This new line will connect Huda City Centre to Cyber City, running through key residential and commercial hubs like Palam Vihar, Rezang La Chowk, Sector 23, and Udyog Vihar. It will also include a spur to Dwarka Expressway, ensuring future integration with the upcoming Delhi–Gurugram–SNB RRTS corridor.
The role of the General Consultant (GC) is vital to the success of large infrastructure projects. In this case, the SYSTRA-led team will oversee design review, construction supervision, project planning, scheduling, quality assurance, and safety monitoring. They will also coordinate efforts among contractors, vendors, and government bodies to ensure smooth execution.
Essentially functioning as the project's eyes and ears on the ground, the GC is tasked with making sure that timelines are followed, quality benchmarks are maintained, and every rupee spent translates into measurable progress. This project management model has proven effective in major metro developments across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, playing a key role in keeping complex infrastructure undertakings on schedule and within scope.
The Union Cabinet approved the Gurugram Metro project in mid-2023, with an estimated cost of around ₹5,452 crore (approx. USD 660 million). The funding is expected to come from a mix of central and state government contributions, private equity, and possibly international financial institutions like JICA or ADB.
With the GC now onboard, civil work is expected to begin by early 2026, and the corridor is targeted for completion and commissioning by 2031, barring delays.
The Gurugram Metro Phase-I project is conceived as a crucial component of a broader regional rapid mobility network, aimed at transforming connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR). This new metro corridor will seamlessly integrate with the existing Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro at Huda City Centre, the Delhi–Gurugram–SNB Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and proposed extensions reaching toward Manesar and IGI Airport.
The overarching goal is to develop a fully integrated, multimodal transport system that not only supports the region’s rapid urban expansion but also reduces reliance on private vehicles, thereby easing traffic congestion and significantly improving air quality throughout the NCR.
Once operational, the Gurugram Metro Phase-I corridor is projected to significantly transform daily commuting and urban mobility in the region. It is expected to serve over 7.5 lakh passengers each day, easing pressure on key arterial roads such as MG Road, Golf Course Road, and NH-48 by reducing traffic congestion. Average commute times could drop by as much as 30 to 40 minutes, offering a faster, more reliable alternative to road travel.
Beyond transportation benefits, the metro is also poised to spur growth in real estate, retail, and business sectors along its route. Equipped with state-of-the-art trains, energy-efficient technologies, and world-class accessibility features, the corridor aims to set a new benchmark for sustainable and inclusive urban transit.
With the General Consultant now in place, Gurugram’s dream of a dedicated intra-city metro system is finally on track. The project promises to revolutionize how the city moves, offering faster, cleaner, and more efficient connectivity for residents and professionals alike.
It also signals Haryana’s broader shift toward transit-oriented development, aligning with India’s national push for smart, sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility.
