General Motors is planning to sell its 50% stake in a planned electric-vehicle battery joint venture in Indiana to its partner Samsung SDI, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The proposed transaction would give Samsung SDI full ownership of the battery-making facility in New Carlisle, Indiana, while GM would exit its share of the venture.
Neither GM nor Samsung SDI immediately responded to requests for comment, and the report could not be independently verified.
GM and Samsung SDI announced the battery partnership in 2024 as part of efforts to expand EV battery production in the United States.
The planned facility was initially designed to have annual production capacity of around 27 gigawatt-hours, with mass production targeted for 2027.
The project covers a 680-acre property in New Carlisle, Indiana. Under the reported transaction, Samsung SDI would purchase the property, take control of the joint venture and own the battery facility.
Construction at the Indiana facility has slowed amid weaker-than-expected demand for electric vehicles.
GM and other automakers have reduced EV manufacturing plans as companies adjust production to match consumer demand. The shift comes after the loss of a $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year, which affected the economics of electric-vehicle purchases and manufacturing.
Automakers continue to produce and sell EVs, but many have become more cautious about expanding production capacity.

The reported Indiana deal follows other changes in GM's battery strategy.
In March, GM and LG Energy Solution announced plans to transform another EV battery plant in Tennessee to produce batteries for energy storage systems rather than focusing exclusively on electric vehicles.
The moves indicate that automakers and battery manufacturers are increasingly looking at alternative uses for battery production facilities as EV demand develops more slowly than previously expected.
If the reported transaction goes ahead, Samsung SDI would take full control of the Indiana battery project and facility.
For Samsung SDI, full ownership could provide greater control over production plans and the use of the site. For GM, selling its stake would allow the automaker to adjust its investment in battery manufacturing while responding to changing EV market conditions.
Further details about the transaction, including its financial terms and timing, were not immediately available.
The potential deal highlights the changing outlook for electric-vehicle manufacturing in the United States.
Battery companies and automakers are reassessing investment plans as EV sales growth, government incentives and production costs evolve. Changes to major battery projects could also affect future US manufacturing capacity and the broader electric-vehicle supply chain.
