At the time, the train was moving slowly, at about 12 kilometers per hour, but the derailment still caused a significant obstruction on the tracks.

Railway officials identified the reason for the derailment as “track settlement” near Bridge No. 91 over the Bhima River. Track settlement occurs when the soil beneath the railway tracks sinks or shifts over time, causing instability in the track structure. This is a common issue in older bridges or areas where the soil is soft or has been disturbed. In this case, the settlement affected the stability of the track, resulting in the train derailment.

The officials acted quickly to ensure the derailed train did not cause further accidents and immediately began planning repairs and restoration.

The derailment disrupted train movement on both the up and down lines of the Hubballi-Solapur route. This route is used by several passenger trains daily, and the sudden blockage caused inconvenience to hundreds of travelers.

The railway authorities announced a suspension of train operations in the affected area until the damaged track and bridge could be repaired. Railway staff worked tirelessly throughout the day to manage the crowd and ensure that all passengers were taken care of until normal train services could resume.

The South Western Railway authorities, including Chief Public Relations Officer Manjunath Kanamadi, confirmed that restoration work had begun immediately. That earlier derailment, however, did not significantly disrupt passenger services because trains were diverted through alternate routes.

These consecutive incidents serve as reminders of the challenges faced by India’s railway infrastructure, including older tracks, heavy train traffic, and occasional soil or structural issues. They underline the importance of investing in railway modernization, continuous monitoring, and preventive maintenance to avoid accidents and disruptions.
