Goods Train Derails Near Bhima River Bridge Services Disrupted

Post by : Armust Desk

Early on the morning of September 25, 2024, a significant incident shook the railway network in Karnataka. An empty goods train traveling on the Hubballi-Solapur railway line derailed near the Bhima River Bridge, causing a major disruption to passenger train services. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and immediate action was taken to ensure safety and manage passenger movement.

The derailment highlights the challenges faced by railway infrastructure and emphasizes the importance of regular track maintenance, as even small issues can cause major disruptions in train services.

How the Incident Happened

Around 1:30 AM, the last locomotive of an empty goods train experienced a derailment between Lachyan and Tadwal stations, in the Gadag-Hotgi section of the railway. Specifically, two wheels of the trailing locomotive left the track. At the time, the train was moving slowly, at about 12 kilometers per hour, but the derailment still caused a significant obstruction on the tracks.

Railway officials identified the reason for the derailment as “track settlement” near Bridge No. 91 over the Bhima River. Track settlement occurs when the soil beneath the railway tracks sinks or shifts over time, causing instability in the track structure. This is a common issue in older bridges or areas where the soil is soft or has been disturbed. In this case, the settlement affected the stability of the track, resulting in the train derailment.

The officials acted quickly to ensure the derailed train did not cause further accidents and immediately began planning repairs and restoration.

Impact on Passenger Services

The derailment disrupted train movement on both the up and down lines of the Hubballi-Solapur route. This route is used by several passenger trains daily, and the sudden blockage caused inconvenience to hundreds of travelers.

Passenger trains that were scheduled to pass through this section had to be halted temporarily. The railway authorities announced a suspension of train operations in the affected area until the damaged track and bridge could be repaired. Travelers faced delays, and many were stranded at nearby stations waiting for alternative arrangements.

The incident caused concern among passengers, as the Bhima River Bridge is a vital link on this railway line. The disruption demonstrated how a single incident on a crucial bridge can affect an entire train schedule, highlighting the importance of constant monitoring and maintenance of railway infrastructure.

Arrangements for Stranded Passengers

To reduce the hardship for stranded travelers, railway officials made immediate arrangements. Passengers on train 17319 were provided with food at Vijayapura railway station. Additionally, three buses were arranged to transport them to their intended destinations safely.

Similarly, passengers from train 16535, which was also affected by the suspension of services, were accommodated in six buses arranged by the authorities. Railway staff worked tirelessly throughout the day to manage the crowd and ensure that all passengers were taken care of until normal train services could resume.

These efforts reflect the commitment of railway officials to passenger safety and comfort during unexpected disruptions.

Restoration and Repair Efforts

The South Western Railway authorities, including Chief Public Relations Officer Manjunath Kanamadi, confirmed that restoration work had begun immediately. The team of engineers and technical staff inspected the site, assessed the extent of the damage, and started work to repair the track and stabilize the bridge.

Repairing a track near a river bridge is a delicate and time-consuming process. Authorities need to ensure that the bridge structure is completely safe before allowing trains to pass over it. Heavy machinery, track panels, and safety inspections were all part of the restoration process. Railway officials assured the public that every step was being taken to resume services as quickly as possible without compromising safety.

Previous Related Incidents

This derailment was not an isolated event. Less than 24 hours earlier, five wagons of another empty goods train had derailed at the New Maynaguri station in West Bengal’s Alipurduar division. That earlier derailment, however, did not significantly disrupt passenger services because trains were diverted through alternate routes.

These consecutive incidents serve as reminders of the challenges faced by India’s railway infrastructure, including older tracks, heavy train traffic, and occasional soil or structural issues. They underline the importance of investing in railway modernization, continuous monitoring, and preventive maintenance to avoid accidents and disruptions.

Significance of the Bhima River Bridge

The Bhima River Bridge is a crucial part of the Hubballi-Solapur railway line. It connects important towns and cities and is frequently used by both passenger and freight trains. Any disruption at this bridge affects not just one train, but the entire network of trains on this line.

Railway bridges over rivers require extra care because they are exposed to water erosion, soil movement, and seasonal changes that can weaken the foundation. In this case, the track settlement was an issue of soil stability around the bridge, which eventually led to the derailment. Authorities are now reviewing the structural health of other bridges in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Lessons and Future Precautions

The derailment near the Bhima River Bridge is a clear reminder of the need for vigilance in railway operations. While modern technology has improved train safety, human oversight and regular inspection remain essential.

Railway officials have stated that they will increase the frequency of inspections, especially on older bridges and areas prone to soil settlement. Continuous monitoring, use of stronger track materials, and timely maintenance can help reduce the risk of derailments and ensure passenger safety.

For passengers, it also serves as a reminder to stay informed about train schedules, especially during periods of maintenance or natural challenges like soil erosion or heavy rains, which can affect railway operations.

The derailment of the empty goods train near the Bhima River Bridge caused significant disruption but, fortunately, no casualties. Immediate response by railway officials minimized inconvenience, and repair efforts began without delay.

This incident highlights the importance of maintaining railway infrastructure, monitoring track conditions, and ensuring that bridges and tracks are safe for the heavy traffic they carry every day. With proactive steps, the railway authorities aim to prevent similar incidents and maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient rail network for passengers and goods alike.
