On Saturday, Delhi and nearby areas received heavy rainfall. This rain brought some relief from the usual hot and humid weather that the city faces during the summer. However, the heavy rain also caused many problems in different parts of the city. Some areas were flooded with water, and traffic was affected badly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the national capital, warning people to be careful because of the heavy rain and possible storms.
Waterlogging in Many Parts of Delhi Disrupts Daily Life
The heavy rain began during the night and continued early into the morning. Because of this, many roads in Delhi became waterlogged. Waterlogging means water collects and stays on the roads, making it hard for vehicles and pedestrians to move. Important roads like Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, and Connaught Place were badly affected. People faced difficulty going to work, school, or other places because of the floods and traffic jams. The rainwater slowed down traffic, making many people late or stuck on the way.
Traffic Jams Make Travel Difficult Across the City
Many areas saw slow-moving or stopped vehicles due to the water on the roads. The water on roads can cause accidents or damage to vehicles if drivers are not careful. Traffic police and workers tried their best to manage the traffic, but with such heavy rain, it was difficult to keep everything moving smoothly. People were advised to use alternate routes if possible and to leave early to avoid delays. The rain also made walking unsafe in some parts because of slippery roads and deep water pools.
Delhi Airport Faces Flight Delays but Continues Operations
The heavy rain also affected flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Many flights were delayed, and some were cancelled. Despite the disruptions, the airport said that flight operations were still running normally. The Delhi Airport shared a message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying that bad weather conditions due to the rain were causing some delays. They assured passengers that the airport’s ground teams were working hard with all involved parties to keep journeys as smooth as possible. They urged travellers to stay calm and check for updates.
Flight Delays and Cancellations at Delhi Airport
FlightRadar24, a flight tracking service, shared data at 9:15 AM on Saturday showing the impact of the rain on flights. It reported that 141 departing flights were delayed, and three flights were cancelled. On the arrival side, 24 flights were delayed, and one was cancelled. These delays caused inconvenience for many passengers, especially those with connecting flights. The weather made it difficult for planes to take off or land on time. Airport authorities advised passengers to check their flight status before coming to the airport to avoid waiting unnecessarily.
IndiGo Warns Passengers About Traffic and Flight Delays
IndiGo, one of India’s largest airlines, issued an advisory to passengers on X. They warned that many roads in Delhi were blocked or had slow traffic because of the heavy rain. They asked passengers to allow extra time to reach the airport. IndiGo also encouraged travellers to check their flight status on their website or mobile app before leaving for the airport. The airline said their teams were working hard to support passengers and keep flights on schedule as much as possible during the bad weather.
SpiceJet Advises Passengers to Stay Updated on Flights
SpiceJet also posted an advisory warning passengers that heavy rain in Delhi could affect departures and arrivals. They said flight schedules might change, and passengers should keep checking the SpiceJet website for the latest flight status. SpiceJet reminded travellers that weather delays are common during heavy rain, and it is important to stay informed to avoid any confusion at the airport.
Air India Cautions About Possible Flight and Traffic Delays
Air India gave a similar warning. They told passengers that rain might affect flights to and from Delhi. They advised everyone to check their flight status before coming to the airport. Air India also asked passengers to allow more time for their journey because of traffic jams and waterlogged roads caused by the rain. The airline said they are doing their best to help passengers during these difficult weather conditions.
Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms and Warm Temperatures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted that Saturday would continue to have thunderstorms and rain. They said the temperature in Delhi would be between 25°C and 33°C. This means the weather would stay warm but wet throughout the day. People were advised to carry umbrellas or raincoats if they planned to go outside. The forecast also suggested people stay alert for any sudden changes in weather, such as stronger storms or heavy showers.
How the Rain Affects People and Travel in Delhi
While the rain provides some relief from the heat, it creates many challenges for daily life. Water on the streets causes problems for drivers and pedestrians. Flooded roads lead to traffic jams and slow movement. Public transport also gets delayed, affecting people who depend on it. Many workers and students found it hard to reach their destinations on time. For travellers going to the airport, the rain made it necessary to leave much earlier than usual to avoid missing flights.
Advice for People During the Heavy Rain
Because of the weather, officials asked people to be very careful while traveling. It is better to avoid unnecessary trips during heavy rain and storms. Drivers should reduce speed to avoid accidents on slippery roads. Pedestrians should avoid walking through flooded areas to stay safe. People with important travel plans should check their flight and train status before leaving. Using apps and websites for real-time information helps avoid surprises and saves time.
Efforts by Authorities to Manage the Situation
City authorities, traffic police, and airport staff worked hard to manage the effects of the heavy rain. Pumps were used to remove water from flooded areas. Traffic police guided vehicles and helped reduce jams where possible. At the airport, staff helped passengers with information and tried to keep flights running smoothly despite delays. Emergency services remained alert to respond quickly in case of accidents or other problems caused by the rain.
Stay Safe and Plan Ahead During Rainy Days
Heavy rain in Delhi offers much-needed coolness but causes troubles with waterlogging, traffic jams, and flight delays. It is important for everyone to stay updated with weather news and travel advisories. Passengers flying from Delhi Airport should check their flight status and allow extra time for travel. Drivers and pedestrians should be cautious and patient on the roads. With proper planning and care, people can avoid many problems caused by the heavy rain.
