New Delhi | June 2025 — In a powerful indicator of India’s accelerating shift toward electric mobility, iPower Batteries, one of the country's leading EV battery manufacturers, has reported a staggering 50% surge in demand for e-rickshaw batteries over the past financial year. The jump reflects both the deepening penetration of electric rickshaws in urban and semi-urban India and the expanding focus on sustainable transport solutions by state and local governments.
This significant increase has been largely driven by two converging factors: a growing push for cleaner last-mile mobility and the steady phasing out of older, fossil-fuel-powered three-wheelers across Indian cities. With electric rickshaws becoming a staple of urban transportation—especially in tier-2 and tier-3 towns—battery makers like iPower are scaling operations to keep pace with demand.
iPower Batteries, which specializes in advanced lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries for electric vehicles, noted that its growth isn’t merely a spike but part of a broader trend in India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape. The company attributes the rising numbers to increased adoption by fleet operators, a sharp uptick in government EV subsidies, and rising fuel prices, which are pushing traditional rickshaw drivers to transition to electric models.
Speaking to Future Mobility Media, a senior executive at iPower explained, “This isn’t just about increased sales—it’s about a shift in mindset. Drivers, aggregators, and local transport providers are now recognizing that the economics of EVs work in their favor. E-rickshaws powered by reliable batteries drastically reduce operational costs.”
The executive further emphasized that battery demand is especially strong in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Delhi, where the adoption of e-rickshaws has been notably aggressive. In some areas, electric rickshaws now account for over 80% of the public three-wheeler fleet.
Another contributor to this upward trajectory is the emergence of a supportive ecosystem around e-rickshaws and EVs more broadly. From charging stations in dense urban zones to battery swapping networks in smaller towns, India’s electric infrastructure is beginning to catch up with its ambitious EV targets.
According to industry experts, the demand for e-rickshaw batteries is not just a function of new vehicle sales but also repeat demand for battery replacements in existing fleets. “A typical e-rickshaw requires battery replacement every 12–18 months,” noted a mobility consultant. “As more vehicles complete their first lifecycle, demand for durable, quick-charging battery solutions like iPower’s will only increase.”
In response to this surge, iPower Batteries has scaled up production capacity and invested in R&D to improve battery efficiency, lifespan, and charging speed. The company is also focusing on enhancing temperature resilience and safety features—crucial for India’s diverse and often harsh climatic conditions.
Additionally, iPower has been collaborating with e-rickshaw manufacturers and logistics operators to develop customized battery packs that better align with specific regional and operational needs. From high-capacity batteries for long intra-city commutes to lighter, swappable units for short-range last-mile delivery vehicles, the company is pushing innovation to stay ahead of evolving demands.
The boom in demand is further fueled by supportive policy frameworks, including the FAME II scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles), state-level EV incentives, and tax exemptions on electric vehicles and components. These initiatives have lowered the entry barrier for thousands of small-scale e-rickshaw operators, many of whom operate on thin margins and are now finding EVs to be the more viable long-term choice.
Local governments have also played a role, with cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna setting targets to electrify large segments of their intra-city public transport by 2026. Battery providers like iPower are riding this wave of policy alignment with private sector readiness.
As India's EV journey gains momentum, companies like iPower Batteries are poised to play a defining role—not only as suppliers but as enablers of a cleaner, more cost-efficient mobility future.
