Iran Advances Aviation with Simorgh and Regional Plane Designs

Iran’s aviation sector faces significant hurdles, with a large portion of its fleet grounded due to aging aircraft and sanctions-related restrictions. As of the first half of the Iranian year 1404 (March–September 2025), only 211 passenger aircraft were operational, while roughly half of the fleet remained inactive.

Given high maintenance costs, sanctions, and restrictions on aircraft purchases, the country is moving from relying on imported technology to independent aircraft design and manufacturing. Officials stress that importing planes is no longer sustainable, prompting a strategic shift to domestic production.

The Simorgh transport aircraft represents Iran’s first major success in this new approach. Built by the Air Industries Organization under the Ministry of Defense, the plane is designed for cargo and logistical missions. Recent flight tests demonstrated Iran’s ability to manufacture airframes, integrate flight systems, and conduct design and testing entirely domestically.

Following Simorgh’s success, Iranian technical teams have entered the design phase for two new 20-seat regional passenger aircraft. These small aircraft aim to expand regional flights across the country, offering a domestic solution to growing passenger transport demand.

During the same period, only six aircraft were added to Iran’s active fleet, a number far below the growing demand for air travel. This shortage highlights the need for domestic aircraft development and innovation in design, production, and maintenance.

By designing both transport and passenger planes domestically, Iran seeks to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and circumvent sanctions-related barriers. This approach emphasizes technological independence, providing the foundation for a more resilient and modern national airline industry.

The shift to domestic design is expected to renew Iran’s fleet, improve air connectivity in regional areas, and support both cargo and passenger operations. With Simorgh’s success, the country demonstrates capability in airframe production, flight systems integration, and testing, paving the way for future aviation projects.
