Japanese trading powerhouse Itochu Corporation has made a strategic move in the shipping industry by placing an order for two brand-new Ultramax bulk carriers at China’s New Dayang Shipbuilding. This marks Itochu’s return to the Jiangsu-based yard, which has increasingly become a preferred choice for Japanese shipowners seeking reliable and cost-effective vessel construction.

The financial details of the contract have not been disclosed, but industry experts note that this is the second Japanese order New Dayang has received this year, highlighting the growing confidence of Japanese companies in the shipyard’s capabilities. Since January, New Dayang has successfully secured a total of five Ultramax orders from Japanese clients, reflecting a steady rise in its international reputation.

Ultramax bulk carriers, known for their versatility and efficiency in transporting bulk commodities, have become a cornerstone for companies like Itochu, which continue to expand their presence in global trade. The yard’s ability to deliver high-quality vessels on schedule has made it an attractive partner, especially amid increasing demand for modern and fuel-efficient ships in the shipping industry.

In a related development, reports suggest that Cairo-based United Marine Egypt is in talks with New Dayang for a pair of Ultramax vessels scheduled for delivery in 2027. While the shipyard has yet to confirm this potential order, such negotiations indicate New Dayang’s growing international appeal beyond Japanese clients.

Maritime analysts believe that Itochu’s latest move not only strengthens its own fleet but also signals broader trends in the shipping sector, where Asian shipyards are increasingly capturing the attention of global operators.
