Jammu and Srinagar are set to see a major upgrade in public transport with the addition of 200 new electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme. The initiative, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aims to expand zero-emission mobility and provide commuters with faster, cleaner, and more reliable travel options.
Under the scheme, Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) and Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) will each induct 100 electric buses. For Jammu, this includes 25 twelve-metre and 75 seven-metre buses, while Srinagar will get 20 twelve-metre and 80 nine-metre buses.
“This expansion builds on the FAME-II electric buses already serving thousands of passengers daily,” said Ashish Anand, Senior General Manager of JSCL and Nodal Officer for the Jammu & Kashmir e-Bus Project.
Larger 12-metre buses in Jammu will operate on high-demand corridors such as Samba, RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Sunderbani, while smaller 7-metre buses will navigate the narrow streets of the Old and Heritage City. In Srinagar, a mix of 12-metre and 9-metre buses will strengthen busy routes including Pantha Chowk, Lal Chowk, Hazratbal, and Batamaloo. The expanded fleet is expected to reduce overcrowding, improve punctuality, and meet rising commuter demand during peak hours.
The buses are being procured through a unified national tender led by Convergence Energy Services Limited. PMI Electro Mobility, Progressive Autoserve, and Urban Paribahan Services have been selected to supply the larger buses, while procurement for 7-metre buses is ongoing. Both cities are also enhancing bus infrastructure under the Green Urban Mobility Initiatives, including dedicated bus lanes, queue jumpers, redesigned shelters with real-time displays, CCTV, panic buttons, and accessibility features.
The new buses will be integrated with the Intelligent Transit Management System (ITMS) and Automatic Fare Collection System, allowing QR-based tickets, NCMC smart cards, and mobile payments. These digital systems will help optimize route planning, monitor fleet performance, and adjust services based on demand.
The project is expected to provide safer, reliable access to schools, hospitals, markets, and workplaces, especially benefiting women, senior citizens, and low-income commuters. Electric buses will also reduce pollution, contributing to cleaner air in congested city areas. Additionally, the initiative will create employment opportunities for drivers, conductors, mechanics, depot staff, and IT support personnel, while boosting local businesses in charging systems, repair services, battery management, and component recycling.
