Japan PM Highlights Strong Ties with Trump After Tense China Dispute

Post by : Saif

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has emphasized that the United States remains a strong partner after her first telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The discussion took place during a difficult moment in Asian diplomacy, as Tokyo is involved in rising tensions with China following her comments on Taiwan. Earlier in the month, Takaichi stated in parliament that a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan could result in military action from Japan. That statement angered Beijing, which responded with strong criticism and even announced a suspension of travel to Japan. The situation has increased concerns in the region, and many in Tokyo were waiting to see how Washington would react.

After the phone call, Takaichi told reporters that President Trump said they were extremely good friends and that she should call him anytime. This comment appeared to be aimed at calming any fears that the U.S. might remain silent in the dispute. Trump also shared information about his recent call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump later said publicly that relations with China were extremely strong, but he did not mention Taiwan directly. The White House has not yet released a statement about Trump’s call with Takaichi, but her account of the discussion was clearly meant to show that the U.S. government continues to support Japan.

The disagreement centers on Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory and has not ruled out taking by force. Taiwan sits just over 100 kilometers from Japanese territory and firmly rejects China’s claims, saying that only Taiwan’s people can decide their own future. China’s state news agency reported that Xi told Trump that Taiwan’s “return to China” is part of Beijing’s long-term vision for global order. Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai reacted by stating that for Taiwan’s 23 million people, returning to China is not an option.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said that stable relations between the United States and China were extremely important not only for Japan but for the whole international community. He did not directly comment on Xi’s remarks but acknowledged that Japan is watching the situation closely. Japan has been increasing its military capabilities over the past few years as worries about China’s regional ambitions continue to grow. Recently, Beijing criticized Japan’s plan to deploy a medium-range missile defense unit to Yonaguni, the Japanese island closest to Taiwan, calling the move an attempt to create tension and provoke confrontation.

Although Trump has not publicly taken a direct position in the dispute, the U.S. ambassador to Japan has stated that Washington supports Tokyo in the face of Chinese pressure. Still, some experts in Japan worry that Trump, who often prioritizes trade deals, might reduce support for Taiwan if it benefits negotiations with Beijing. Professor Seiko Mimaki of Doshisha University wrote in a newspaper editorial that the Trump administration could sacrifice Taiwan’s interests in return for trade agreements with China, and such a decision might increase the risk of conflict in East Asia.

For now, Takaichi is working to show that Japan’s alliance with the United States remains firm. With tension rising and China reacting strongly, the coming months may become an important test for security and diplomacy in the region. The phone call between Trump and Takaichi may only be the first of many exchanges as all sides continue to navigate the complex future of Asia’s strategic balance.
