JSW MG Motor India Boosts Academia-Industry Links to Bridge Skill Gap

Post by : Meena Rani

JSW MG Motor India has taken a major step to reduce the growing gap between academic learning and industry needs. The company is now working closely with around 25 universities across India to help students gain the practical skills needed for the automotive industry. This move aims to prepare young engineers for real-world challenges and make them job-ready much faster.

Understanding the Gap Between Learning and Industry

According to Manish Manek, Chief of Vehicle Life Cycle Engineering and Head of Engineering at JSW MG Motor India, there is a significant difference between what students learn in colleges and what is actually needed in the automotive industry. Many fresh graduates require six to ten months of extra training before they can effectively work in companies. Manek emphasized that students need exposure to real industry problems while they are still in college. He said that collaboration between universities and industry can ensure students are ready to contribute immediately after graduation.

Changes in Engineering Education

Engineering education has changed a lot over the years. Earlier, students mostly studied mechanical, electrical, or production engineering. Today, many universities teach computer science, electronics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging fields. Core subjects like mechanical or electrical engineering are still important, but now they are often combined with technology-driven areas such as mechatronics and automation. This gives students a wider skill set that matches modern industry requirements.

Hands-On Learning for Students

To make students more prepared, JSW MG Motor India has introduced several practical learning programs. Around 600-800 students benefit from these initiatives each year. The programs include technical lectures, workshops, live demonstrations, and exposure to real automotive components. The company also donates retired car models to colleges, allowing students to study vehicle design, parts, and technology practically.

Such initiatives help students learn beyond textbooks. They can see how engines, brakes, electronics, and other vehicle systems work in real life. This hands-on experience makes it easier for students to understand industry problems and think of solutions.

Collaborating with Top Institutions

Top institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are also working to match education with industry needs. Manek highlighted that the third and fourth years of engineering are crucial for practical learning. Activities like industry visits, live projects, expert talks, and panel discussions help students gain real-world experience. Students who participate in these programs are more confident, skilled, and ready to start their careers immediately after graduation.

Benefits for Students and Industry

JSW MG Motor India’s initiative benefits both students and the automotive industry. Students gain knowledge, practical experience, and better career opportunities. At the same time, the industry gets access to skilled professionals who can quickly adapt to new technologies and work effectively on advanced projects.

The collaboration also encourages innovation. By learning about real-world challenges, students can develop creative solutions that may help the automotive sector grow faster. Such programs ensure that India produces a workforce capable of meeting global automotive standards.

As the automotive industry continues to grow and adopt new technologies, partnerships between universities and companies like JSW MG Motor India are becoming essential. These collaborations help students bridge the gap between theory and practice, prepare for careers, and contribute meaningfully to the industry.

By supporting education, providing hands-on learning opportunities, and sharing industry knowledge, JSW MG Motor India is setting an example of how companies can invest in the future workforce. Such initiatives will continue to play a key role in producing skilled engineers ready for modern challenges.
