JSW Steel and APMDC Join Forces for ₹1,075 Crore Iron Ore Project

Post by : Armust Desk

In a significant development for India’s steel industry, JSW Steel has joined hands with the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) to launch a large-scale iron ore project in the state. This partnership is expected to boost domestic steel production, strengthen raw material availability, and reduce dependence on imported iron ore, which has long been a challenge for steel manufacturers in India.

The collaboration was formally announced in 2025 and will take the form of a joint venture named APJSW Private Limited. JSW Steel will hold an 89% stake in the venture, while APMDC will retain 11%. This partnership is focused on the development of the Konijedu Marlapadu Integrated Iron Ore Project, located in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. The project has been carefully planned to mine and process low-grade iron ore and convert it into high-quality concentrate that can be directly used in steel production.

Project Scope and Investment

The Konijedu Marlapadu project is one of the most significant investments in the region, with a total outlay of ₹1,075 crore. It is designed to produce about 1.3 million tonnes of beneficiated iron ore concentrate every year. This production capacity is expected to significantly reduce the need for imported iron ore for JSW Steel, helping the company cut costs and stabilize supply for its steel plants across India.

The project will involve modern mining and processing techniques, ensuring that the iron ore is extracted efficiently and upgraded to meet high-quality standards. It will also include infrastructure for transportation, storage, and beneficiation, creating a complete integrated system that supports steel production from mine to factory.

Strategic Importance

This partnership is strategically important for JSW Steel. By investing in domestic mining operations, the company will secure a consistent and cost-effective supply of iron ore, shielding itself from the uncertainties of global iron ore prices. This move is also expected to strengthen the company’s long-term competitiveness in the steel market.

The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities in the region. From skilled mining professionals to support staff and local workers, the Konijedu Marlapadu project will contribute to the socio-economic development of Prakasam district. Local communities are likely to benefit from better infrastructure, improved services, and opportunities for business and skill development.

Environmental and Social Commitment

JSW Steel and APMDC have emphasized that the project will follow strict environmental and social guidelines. Efforts will be made to minimize ecological impact, including measures to conserve local flora and fauna, reduce pollution, and manage waste responsibly. Social initiatives will focus on the welfare of local communities, ensuring that development benefits the people living around the mining site.

The project aims to be a model for sustainable mining practices in India, demonstrating that industrial development and environmental protection can go hand in hand. By investing in local communities and infrastructure, the partnership aims to create lasting positive impacts beyond steel production.

The establishment of APJSW Private Limited marks a major step forward for India’s domestic iron ore sector. The Konijedu Marlapadu project is expected to strengthen JSW Steel’s supply chain, provide economic benefits to Andhra Pradesh, and support India’s ambition to be self-reliant in steel production.

As the project progresses, both JSW Steel and APMDC are committed to transparency, sustainability, and long-term growth. The successful implementation of this project could pave the way for more collaborations in mining and industry, enhancing India’s industrial landscape and providing opportunities for local communities to thrive.
