Kanpur is moving steadily toward a major transformation in its public transportation network. One of the most important projects currently underway is the development of Corridor-2 of the Kanpur Metro, which will connect Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA) to Barra-8. On Friday, a significant milestone was achieved as the installation of the ‘Third Rail’ began at the new metro depot located inside the CSA campus.
This marks a critical step forward in preparing the infrastructure for the arrival of metro trains that will run on this route.
Corridor-2 is the second metro line being developed in Kanpur. It will run from CSA University to Barra-8, covering many important residential, educational, and commercial zones of the city. This corridor is designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a cleaner, more efficient public transport option to thousands of daily commuters.
Once completed, this corridor will serve as a lifeline for residents living in the southern parts of Kanpur and offer them easy access to the central city.
Civil construction work for this corridor is progressing at a rapid pace. The foundation and structure for various sections are already taking shape. The metro depot inside the CSA campus is a vital part of the project. This facility will be responsible for the operation, testing, and maintenance of the Corridor-2 trains.
A few weeks ago, track laying at the depot site began. Now, the ‘Third Rail’ system installation has also started, showing clear signs of progress and preparation for train arrival.
The ‘Third Rail’ is a power supply rail placed beside the train track. Unlike traditional rail systems that use overhead electric wires, the Kanpur Metro uses a Third Rail system to deliver electricity directly to the metro trains.
Here’s why the Third Rail matters:
Efficient Power Supply: Provides a consistent and secure power source
Modern Technology: Offers a sleek and advanced alternative to overhead wires
Safety and Reliability: Built with strict safety protocols and easier maintenance
The bracket installation for this system began on Friday, which is the first step before the full rail is placed beside the tracks.
The depot at CSA University is not just for train storage. It is being developed as a state-of-the-art facility to handle train maintenance, inspection, cleaning, repairs, and technical support. It will include:
15 different tracks: Both ballasted (with gravel) and ballastless (smooth concrete)
Power supply systems for each track using the Third Rail
Modern equipment and repair tools to keep the trains running smoothly
This depot will serve as the central hub for all train activities on Corridor-2, ensuring high operational efficiency and safety.
According to UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, 10 trains, each with three coaches, will run on Corridor-2. These trains are being specially manufactured and will arrive in Kanpur in the next few months. Once delivered, they will undergo trial runs, testing, and certification before being opened for public use.
Each coach will be air-conditioned, spacious, and equipped with modern features such as automatic doors, emergency communication, digital route displays, and CCTV surveillance.
UPMRC MD Sushil Kumar praised the hard-working metro team and said:
“We are committed to delivering a world-class metro system to the people of Kanpur. With the Third Rail installation beginning, we are one step closer to making Corridor-2 operational. Our depot will offer modern, high-tech solutions for maintenance and safety.”
He also added that the work is being carried out as per global standards, and no compromises are being made on quality, safety, or efficiency.
With the beginning of the Third Rail installation, the next steps include:
Finishing track work across the entire depot area
Complete installation of the Third Rail along all 15 tracks
Arrival and unloading of metro trains at the depot
System testing, including power checks, safety audits, and trial runs
Final inspection and clearance by the Metro Rail Safety Commission
After all these steps, the corridor will be ready for its public launch.
This metro line will transform the way people travel in Kanpur. With faster, more reliable, and environment-friendly transport, Corridor-2 will:
Reduce pressure on roads by encouraging people to use public transport
Cut down pollution by using electric-powered trains
Improve connectivity between southern and central parts of the city
Save time for office-goers, students, and daily travelers
It will also improve economic activity along the corridor route as stations become new hubs of commerce and development.
The beginning of Third Rail installation at the CSA depot is a major achievement for Kanpur Metro’s Corridor-2. It shows that work is progressing with serious dedication and vision. In the coming months, residents of Kanpur will witness more visible changes as the project reaches its final stages.
All eyes are now on the arrival of the trains, the completion of the depot, and the successful launch of the new metro corridor.
Kanpur is well on its way to joining the league of Indian cities with a world-class metro system—safe, modern, and built for the future.
