Karnataka has announced an ambitious ₹2,000-crore initiative aimed at transforming public transportation through the introduction of thousands of Karnataka electric buses. Revealed during the state’s 2026 budget, the programme highlights a strong commitment to sustainable mobility and cleaner urban transport systems. The initiative aims to expand electric bus services across cities and regional routes, improving accessibility while reducing environmental impact.
Under the new electric bus programme, the state government plans to introduce nearly 4,000 electric buses across transport networks operated by various state transport corporations. The expanded electric bus fleet will operate on both urban and semi-urban routes, helping to meet rising commuter demand and reduce reliance on conventional diesel buses.
To support the growing electric bus fleet, Karnataka will also invest in modernizing transport depots across the state. Several depots operated by major transport corporations will be upgraded with charging stations, maintenance facilities, and digital fleet management systems. These upgrades will ensure efficient operations and enable transport authorities to manage large numbers of electric buses effectively.
The introduction of Karnataka electric buses is expected to play a key role in reducing air pollution and improving environmental sustainability in urban areas. Electric buses produce significantly lower emissions compared with traditional diesel vehicles and operate with reduced noise levels, making them an attractive option for modern public transport systems.
Along with environmental benefits, the new electric bus programme is expected to enhance the overall commuting experience for passengers. Electric buses typically offer smoother rides, modern interiors, and improved reliability. With the expansion of the electric bus fleet, more commuters may choose public transport over private vehicles, helping reduce congestion in busy cities.
The ₹2,000-crore initiative represents one of the largest public transport investments in the state’s recent history. By expanding Karnataka electric buses and strengthening operational infrastructure, the government aims to build a future-ready mobility network that supports economic growth while promoting cleaner and more efficient transportation.
