New Vande Bharat Express services have been launched between Katra and Srinagar (Train Nos. 26401/26402), marking a significant moment in India’s rail history. The new line completes the long-planned integration of the Kashmir Valley with the national railway network.
An official confirmation has been issued for a two-minute stop at Reasi station starting late October 2025. The move comes after repeated public demand from travelers heading to religious and tourist destinations. Authorities will assess passenger response and commercial performance before making the stop permanent.
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) features some of India’s most remarkable engineering marvels, including:
Chenab Bridge – the world’s highest railway bridge
Anji Khad Bridge – India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge
These milestones highlight India’s expertise in constructing complex mountain railway systems with precision and safety.
The expansion of Kashmir’s railway network is expected to boost tourism, trade, and connectivity across the region. The Vande Bharat Express ensures faster, monsoon-resistant travel, maintaining steady passenger flow even when roads are affected by floods or landslides.
To support travel during construction, special train services between Katra and Banihal were already operating to keep the corridor functional.
Reasi MLA Kuldeep Raj Dubey thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for fulfilling the public’s long-standing demand. Local residents believe the new railway link will create jobs and increase tourism revenue in Jammu and Kashmir.
The railway administration is working toward direct links between Kashmir and major Indian cities, furthering national integration. This achievement reflects India’s growing strength in railway innovation and mountain infrastructure development, bringing new opportunities for travel and regional growth.
