Kim Jong Un Welcomes 2026 with Daughter at New Year Celebrations in Pyongyang

Post by : Saif

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un marked the start of 2026 by attending New Year celebrations in the capital city of Pyongyang, according to state media. The event featured fireworks, patriotic songs, traditional dances, and a taekwondo demonstration, offering a rare public display of national celebration in the tightly controlled country.

Kim was joined by his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, whose repeated public appearances with him have drawn attention both inside and outside North Korea. Photographs released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency showed the pair sitting together, holding hands, and warmly greeting children during the event. Kim Ju Ae was seen hugging children alongside her father, a gesture that appeared aimed at showing a caring and family-centered image of the leadership.

During the celebrations, Kim delivered a speech praising the North Korean people for what he described as “successes and phenomenal changes” achieved during 2025. He stressed the importance of unity as the country prepares for a major political meeting expected in early 2026. This gathering, known as the 9th Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, is expected to set the nation’s direction for the next five years.

The upcoming party congress is seen as a key moment for North Korea. It is expected to outline plans in areas such as economic development, national defense, and weapons programs. Past party congresses have often been used to announce new policies and long-term goals, making the next meeting closely watched by observers.

Kim also used the New Year occasion to send a message to North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in the war in Ukraine. He described the troops as a source of pride and strength for the country and expressed hope that they would return home safely. In his message, Kim said they were supported by both Pyongyang and Moscow, highlighting the growing ties between North Korea and Russia.

In addition, state media reported that Kim received New Year greeting cards from several foreign leaders, including the Chinese president and his wife, though no names or details were shared. This brief mention suggested ongoing diplomatic contacts, especially with countries seen as friendly to North Korea.

The appearance of Kim Ju Ae at such a major event has again raised questions about her future role. Some experts believe she may be preparing for a larger public role one day, though North Korea has not officially named a successor.

As North Korea enters 2026, the New Year celebrations sent a clear message of unity, continuity, and confidence. Through carefully staged images and speeches, the leadership aimed to show strength at home while signaling its priorities for the year ahead.
