Lockheed Martin Unveils Vectis Next-Gen Collaborative Combat Drone

Post by : Meena Rani

Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division has unveiled Vectis, a next-generation Group 5 collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) designed to deliver high survivability and lethal capability in contested environments. Classified as a Group 5 platform—the largest and most capable class of unmanned aerial systems—Vectis is engineered for long-endurance, high-altitude missions with global reach, supporting advanced air dominance operations for U.S. and allied forces.

According to Lockheed Martin, Vectis represents a significant leap forward in unmanned aviation, combining stealth, agility, affordability, and mission flexibility. It is expected to redefine the role of unmanned systems in modern warfare, particularly in contested airspaces where survivability and integrated operational capability are critical.

A New Paradigm in Air Power

“Vectis is the culmination of our expertise in complex systems integration, advanced fighter development, and autonomy,” said OJ Sanchez, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. “We’re not simply building a new platform – we’re creating a new paradigm for air power based on a highly capable, customizable, and affordable agile drone framework.”

The aircraft is designed to operate seamlessly alongside both current and next-generation manned fighters, including the F-35, advancing Lockheed Martin’s Family of Systems vision. The platform leverages proven performance on common control systems like MDCX, ensuring compatibility across a wide spectrum of command and control networks.

Mission Flexibility and Multi-Domain Capability

Vectis is built to perform a broad range of missions, from precision strike and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) targeting to electronic warfare and offensive and defensive counterair operations. Its multi-domain connectivity allows it to operate independently or in integrated teaming missions with manned aircraft.

The aircraft is also designed with endurance and range suitable for operations in Indo-Pacific, European, and Central Command theaters, providing global reach and operational flexibility.

Advanced Stealth and Survivability

Drawing on decades of Lockheed Martin experience in stealth development, Vectis offers class-leading survivability. Its design leverages advanced materials, optimized shape, and innovative engineering to minimize detectability and maximize operational resilience in contested environments.

The platform is designed to deliver survivable, multi-role capability at an affordable price point for CCAs, applying lessons learned from next-generation fighter development and digital engineering practices. This approach aims to accelerate development cycles while avoiding vendor lock-in, aligning the platform with Government Reference Architectures for open systems integration.

Development and Deployment Plans

Lockheed Martin confirmed that Vectis’ development is actively underway, with parts ordered and dedicated teams executing construction and testing. The company has committed the necessary funds and manpower to build and test systems that meet evolving customer needs while maintaining compatibility with new tri-service architectures and global operational requirements.

Skunk Works has a long history of solving complex problems in the most challenging operational environments. With Vectis, that expertise is applied to an unmanned platform that combines stealth, speed, altitude capability, and advanced materials for enhanced safety and operational effectiveness.

Aggressive Timelines and Cost Targets

The company has set ambitious goals for the Vectis program, aiming to design, build, and fly the aircraft within two years while delivering high-end survivability and advanced mission system capability at aggressive cost targets. This accelerated timeline reflects Skunk Works’ commitment to rapid innovation and deployment in response to modern threats and evolving global defense needs.

Vectis is positioned to become a cornerstone of future air power, providing U.S. and allied forces with a versatile, survivable, and integrated unmanned platform capable of complementing existing and next-generation manned aircraft. Its development underscores Lockheed Martin’s focus on advancing the role of unmanned systems in air dominance, providing strategic flexibility and operational superiority in contested theaters worldwide.

By combining advanced stealth, multi-role mission capability, long-range endurance, and integration with next-generation fighters, Vectis exemplifies the next frontier in unmanned aviation. As the program progresses, the platform is expected to unlock new possibilities for air power, demonstrating the strategic value of collaborative combat aircraft in modern warfare.
