A New Contender Enters the Luxury EV Arena
MG Motor is set to make a bold statement in India’s luxury electric vehicle segment with the upcoming launch of its M9 electric MPV. Slated for a price reveal in August 2025, the M9 is positioned as a high-end people mover, bringing a blend of cutting-edge EV technology, top-tier interior features, and unmistakable road presence. As anticipation builds, industry observers believe the M9 will be a serious rival to models like the BYD E6 and Toyota’s upcoming Innova EV, pushing the boundaries of what Indian buyers can expect in an electric multi-purpose vehicle.
Design and Styling That Turns Heads
Based on the Maxus Mifa 9, a global electric MPV already on sale in several markets, the MG M9 showcases a commanding silhouette with a blend of futuristic lines and luxury details. Prominent full-width LED lighting, a sculpted bonnet, and a flowing side profile highlight the M9's modern aesthetic. MG’s local adaptation ensures the vehicle is tailored for Indian roads and buyer preferences, potentially offering multiple variants and trims to suit personal, corporate, and fleet buyers alike.
Its imposing size and sleek exterior are matched by thoughtful design touches, like flush door handles, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a floating roofline that gives the vehicle a distinctive and upscale look. The rear profile features connected LED taillamps and a clean, elegant finish that avoids the cluttered design language seen in some traditional MPVs.
Plush Interiors Built for Comfort and Tech
Inside, the M9 is expected to push the envelope on luxury. Seating for six or seven, depending on the configuration, will be laid out in a spacious cabin that places comfort and convenience at the forefront. Captain seats with electric adjustment, ventilation, and possibly even massage functions are anticipated in higher trims, while ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof enhance the sense of openness.
At the heart of the dashboard lies a massive digital interface likely featuring a large infotainment display integrated with the instrument cluster. Powered by MG’s iSmart connected car suite, users can expect features like voice control, remote diagnostics, over-the-air updates, and integration with navigation, entertainment, and driver assistance systems.
Materials used in the cabin are expected to mirror those seen in luxury sedans—with soft-touch panels, leather upholstery, and wood or metal accents. Rear-seat passengers may benefit from dedicated climate zones, entertainment screens, and wireless charging, solidifying the M9’s status as a premium family or executive vehicle.
Built on a Global Platform with Local Insights
The MG M9, borrowing from the Maxus Mifa 9's global architecture, is underpinned by an 800V electrical platform, enabling ultra-fast charging and better energy efficiency. In overseas markets, the vehicle uses a 90 kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 520 km on the WLTP cycle. If these specs carry over to the Indian version, it would make the M9 one of the longest-range electric MPVs available in the country.
MG is expected to tune the vehicle’s battery management and cooling systems for Indian climatic conditions, while also working with local suppliers to ensure efficient servicing, part availability, and warranty coverage. With the company’s existing experience with EVs like the ZS EV and Comet EV, MG already has the ecosystem in place to support this high-end model.
The 800V architecture, a rarity even among premium EVs, would make the M9 compatible with ultra-rapid DC chargers, allowing it to add significant range in a matter of minutes. This gives it a huge edge in a segment where charging downtime is a critical concern, especially for fleet or intercity operations.
Technology-Driven Safety and Drive Experience
Safety remains one of MG’s pillars, and the M9 is expected to come loaded with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and 360-degree cameras are likely to be standard or optional on the top trims. With its large proportions, these features won’t just be luxuries—they will be necessary for comfortable urban and highway driving.
The drive experience is expected to be refined and silent, thanks to the electric powertrain’s near-noiseless operation. Dual-motor AWD options, if offered, would enhance traction and performance, especially on highways or steep terrains. Regenerative braking, multiple drive modes, and a sophisticated suspension setup should ensure a plush and controlled ride, aligning with the expectations of premium vehicle buyers.
Positioned as a Segment Leader
Pricing will be the key factor determining the M9’s success in India. Industry experts expect the MG M9 to start from ₹50–60 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on variant and localization levels. While this places it squarely in the luxury bracket, the value proposition is strong considering the range, features, and tech on offer.
The electric MPV space is still nascent in India, giving MG a first-mover advantage in the luxury people mover category. The BYD E6 currently dominates this segment, but it doesn’t offer the same level of interior luxury or brand familiarity as MG. With its strong urban brand presence and growing EV ecosystem, MG is well-positioned to tap into both high-end individual buyers and corporate fleet operators looking to go green without compromising on comfort or space.
MG’s Expanding EV Portfolio
The M9 comes at a time when MG is aggressively expanding its EV offerings in India. Following the success of the ZS EV and the mass-market appeal of the Comet EV, the M9 completes MG’s electric triangle—urban commute, compact affordability, and now full-size luxury.
The company has also been working with battery partners and charging infrastructure providers to build an end-to-end EV ecosystem. MG’s commitment to “EV for Everyone” now takes a leap into the premium territory, potentially boosting the brand’s aspirational value while supporting India’s long-term e-mobility goals.
A Game-Changer in Luxury EV Mobility
With its grand design, high-tech cabin, fast-charging architecture, and premium features, the MG M9 EV MPV could redefine what Indian consumers expect from electric vehicles in the people-mover space. While the final specifications and pricing are expected to be revealed in August 2025, the model already has industry insiders and potential buyers watching closely.
If executed right, the M9 won’t just be a new product—it’ll be a bold statement that the era of electric luxury transport in India has truly begun.
