Montra Electric eHCV (IPL Tech) has become the first electric truck original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to collaborate with the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) platform under the National Highway for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) initiative. This strategic partnership is designed to accelerate the adoption of clean freight solutions by enabling the deployment of more than 1,000 electric trucks across sectors such as logistics, infrastructure, and consumer goods transport.
The move marks a milestone in India’s transition toward sustainable mobility, positioning Montra Electric as a key contributor in reshaping commercial freight transport.
Streamlining fleet adoption through climate financing
The agreement aims to simplify the decision-making process for fleet operators by offering pre-set commercial terms and climate financing solutions. Such mechanisms will reduce the financial burden on transporters while improving the commercial viability of electric freight. The initiative’s financing framework will help operators switch to electric trucks without facing the traditional cost barriers associated with EV adoption.
This structure is expected to encourage large-scale participation from both private fleet owners and logistics providers, ensuring that clean transport becomes not just an environmental commitment but also a profitable business choice.
Integration with advanced charging networks
As part of the collaboration, Montra Electric will work with NHEV stakeholders to develop and test Connected Commercial Vehicle (CCV) protocols. These protocols will integrate electric trucks with smart and advanced charging networks, enabling efficient energy management and seamless long-distance operations.
Pilot programmes are scheduled to begin soon on major highway corridors. These pilots will assess vehicle performance, charging reliability, and overall operational feasibility under real-world conditions. The data gathered will help create a replicable adoption model for fleet operators across India, reducing uncertainties around electric trucking.
Government and industry perspectives
Highlighting the importance of the collaboration, Abhijeet Sinha, National Programme Director, Ease of Doing Business & NHEV, and Principal Advisor – SEPC (Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India), said:
“This collaboration is to facilitate IPL Tech with Ease of Doing Business through emerging tech piloting services under the Government of India’s NHEV Pilot. It will cover both technical and commercial aspects for accelerated deployment by empanelling the OEM in the Connected Commercial Vehicle (CCV) Protocol of the Indian Electric Highways, enabling an advanced Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) and facilitating the blended Climate Financing Instrument – AHEM (Annuity Hybrid E-Mobility) for the financing of 1,000+ electric trucks.”
The introduction of AHEM (Annuity Hybrid E-Mobility) is a crucial innovation in the financing model, combining annuity payments with hybrid climate funding to lower upfront costs for operators.
From the industry’s perspective, Jalaj Gupta, MD of Montra Electric (TICM), emphasized that the partnership represents a shift from planning to execution:
“This partnership is about moving from intent to execution. By working with EoDB, we will lower the barriers to adoption and make electric trucking a practical, profitable choice for transporters and end customers across the country.”
Supporting India’s EV roadmap
The collaboration aligns with India’s broader push for zero-emission freight transport, as freight vehicles currently contribute significantly to the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. Heavy-duty trucks account for a large portion of fuel consumption in road transport, and their electrification is considered essential for meeting India’s climate commitments.
By enabling the structured deployment of electric trucks, this initiative could help India reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, cut logistics costs, and build an integrated clean mobility ecosystem.
From pilot to scale
The NHEV pilot is not just a technology demonstration but also a policy-testing ground that blends innovation with regulatory support. The learnings from live pilot programmes will serve as a framework for scaling electric freight transport across states.
Through CCV protocols, ITMS integration, and smart charging infrastructure, Montra Electric and EoDB aim to deliver a digitally enabled, financially viable, and operationally efficient model. If successful, the collaboration could serve as a blueprint for replicating electric freight adoption at a national scale.
With over 1,000 trucks planned for deployment, Montra Electric’s entry into the NHEV initiative represents a significant leap for India’s commercial EV ecosystem. By addressing both the financial challenges through climate financing and the technical hurdles through CCV-enabled infrastructure, the partnership promises to set new benchmarks for sustainable freight mobility in India.
