Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that he will resign as chairman of the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional, also known as PN. His resignation will take effect on January 1, marking the end of his leadership role in the bloc he has led since its formation five years ago.
Muhyiddin became a key political figure during a period of instability in 2020, when a political crisis led to the collapse of the elected government. He was then appointed Malaysia’s eighth prime minister and later helped form Perikatan Nasional as a new political force. Although his time as prime minister lasted only 17 months, he remained an influential leader in the opposition after leaving office.
In a public statement, Muhyiddin thanked leaders and member parties of PN for their support during his leadership. He said he wished the coalition well and expressed hope for its future direction. His message was polite and calm, but it came at a time when tensions inside the coalition have become more visible.
Perikatan Nasional is made up mainly of Malay Muslim-based parties, including Muhyiddin’s own party, Bersatu, and the Islamist party PAS. In recent weeks, disagreements between these partners have come into the open. PAS has accused Bersatu of trying to push through a leadership change in the northern state of Perlis, which is governed by the PN coalition. These claims have added strain to an alliance that already faces pressure to stay united.
Muhyiddin’s decision to step down raises questions about who will lead the opposition bloc next. He is seen as one of the few PN leaders with appeal beyond a narrow base, especially among moderate voters. His absence at the top could make it harder for the coalition to present a united and attractive alternative to the ruling government.
Malaysia is a diverse country, with people of different races and religions. Ethnic Malay Muslims make up more than 60% of the population, while large Chinese and Indian communities also play an important role in society and politics. In the 2022 general election, Perikatan Nasional gained strong support among ethnic Malay Muslims, especially younger and more traditional voters. This success made PN a serious challenge to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s multi-ethnic and reform-focused alliance.
Political observers say Muhyiddin’s resignation comes at a sensitive time. The opposition must now manage internal differences while trying to maintain its growing support base. Without clear leadership, there is a risk that rival parties within the coalition may compete rather than cooperate.
At the same time, Muhyiddin’s exit could also open the door for renewal. New leadership may bring fresh ideas or help ease tensions between coalition partners. Whether this strengthens or weakens Perikatan Nasional will become clearer in the months ahead.
For now, Muhyiddin’s decision marks the end of an important chapter in Malaysia’s opposition politics. His role in shaping recent political history is significant, and his departure will likely influence how the opposition positions itself against the government in the future.
