In a significant step toward modernizing urban transport and empowering traditional drivers in the digital age, Mumbai’s prominent transport union, Maharashtra Rickshaw Sena, has announced the upcoming launch of its own auto-rickshaw hailing app. This bold move seeks to offer an alternative to dominant private ride-hailing platforms and to put greater control back into the hands of auto drivers, many of whom have long voiced concerns over high commission fees and unfair algorithmic practices.
Slated to roll out in the coming weeks, the new app will enable commuters to book auto-rickshaws directly, bypassing intermediaries like Ola and Uber. The initiative is being hailed by union leaders as a "driver-first" digital solution, designed not just to serve passengers, but to empower rickshaw drivers with better earnings, autonomy, and transparency. It also aims to provide commuters with a reliable, city-wide alternative at standard government-regulated fare rates, free of surge pricing and hidden charges.
The development comes against the backdrop of growing dissatisfaction among Mumbai’s auto-rickshaw community, which has often struggled to keep pace with rapid digitalization in urban mobility. While aggregator apps have revolutionized convenience for riders, they have also brought in significant challenges for drivers, including commission cuts of up to 30%, lack of grievance redressal, and unpredictable incentives. In response, the Maharashtra Rickshaw Sena has taken matters into its own hands—promising to create a driver-owned and operated ecosystem that keeps both livelihoods and service quality at the forefront.
According to union leaders, the app will feature a simple, intuitive interface, real-time ride tracking, and digital payment integration. It will allow drivers to accept rides based on proximity without being penalized by opaque rating systems or strict cancellation policies. The organization also plans to include driver support services, such as maintenance assistance, legal aid, and accident insurance, funded through nominal app subscription fees rather than commissions on rides.
This initiative also aligns with state government efforts to formalize and digitize informal transport sectors, especially in large metros like Mumbai. In recent years, authorities have acknowledged the need to strike a balance between tech-driven convenience and socio-economic fairness, particularly for workers in traditional occupations like auto driving. The Rickshaw Sena’s app could serve as a template for cooperative-based digital mobility models, offering lessons for other cities and unions.
Experts say the timing is strategic. With the rising demand for hyper-local, affordable transport and increased smartphone penetration among drivers, such an app could find immediate traction—especially in residential neighborhoods, business hubs, and transit-starved zones where aggregator coverage is patchy. For many Mumbaikars, the prospect of booking a trusted local auto at fair rates, without the unpredictability of surge pricing or algorithmic delays, could be a welcome shift.
“This is more than an app. It’s a movement to reclaim fairness and dignity in Mumbai’s transport system,” said a senior member of the union. “Our drivers will no longer be at the mercy of tech giants. They will be in control—of their rides, their income, and their future.”
As Mumbai continues its transition into a smart mobility hub, this grassroots innovation could pave the way for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable urban transport model—one that blends the familiarity of local transport with the efficiency of modern technology, and above all, puts people over platforms.
