A new biorefinery project has started in Malaysia. It is being built by three companies working together: Petronas from Malaysia, Enilive from Italy, and Euglena from Japan. This new plant will make cleaner fuels that are better for the environment and can help reduce pollution.
The biorefinery will be located in Pengerang, in the state of Johor. This place is important because it is close to major shipping routes. The plant is expected to start working in the second half of 2028.
The refinery will process up to 650,000 tonnes of renewable materials every year. These materials include used cooking oil, animal fats, and waste left over from vegetable oil production. Instead of being thrown away, these items will be turned into useful fuels.
The refinery will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and bio-naphtha. SAF is especially important for airplanes because it can help reduce the amount of carbon released into the air. Many countries and airlines are looking for cleaner fuel options to fight climate change.
Stefano Ballista, the CEO of Enilive, said this project is an important step toward producing more clean fuel in the future. He said the goal is to produce more than 5 million tonnes of renewable fuel each year by 2030, including more than 2 million tonnes of SAF.
The project shows that companies are working together globally to create cleaner energy. It also supports Malaysia’s plans to grow its green energy industry. As the world looks for ways to reduce pollution and protect the environment, projects like this biorefinery could play a big role in the future.
