June 25, 2025 | Oslo — In a decisive step toward enhancing emergency medical response capabilities across the Nordic region, Norwegian Air Ambulance (Norsk Luftambulanse AS) has announced the acquisition of up to eight Airbus H145 helicopters, marking a significant upgrade to its lifesaving fleet. The deal includes six confirmed aircraft and options for two more, with deliveries scheduled to take place between 2025 and 2027.
This strategic investment is part of a broader modernization plan aimed at bolstering Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) in some of Europe’s most challenging environments. Operating across 13 bases in Norway and neighboring countries, Norwegian Air Ambulance plays a vital role in reaching remote communities where ground transportation is often impossible, especially during harsh winters or across rugged, mountainous terrain.
The Airbus H145, a proven workhorse in the EMS sector, was selected for its twin-engine performance, compact footprint, and state-of-the-art Helionix avionics suite. Equipped with a four-axis autopilot, rear-loading doors, and an ergonomically designed medical cabin, the aircraft allows for faster patient loading and better access for paramedics and doctors during in-flight care. These features are crucial in time-critical missions, where every second can be the difference between life and death.
According to Airbus Helicopters, the H145s for Norwegian Air Ambulance will be assembled at the company’s Donauwörth facility in Germany, and customized for medical missions. The helicopters will feature lightweight stretchers, integrated life support systems, and advanced communications equipment. Notably, the cockpit will be night vision goggle-compatible, ensuring the aircraft are fully capable of operating around the clock, even in poor visibility and adverse weather—common conditions in Scandinavian winters.
The addition of the H145s is expected to bring substantial operational benefits, including higher dispatch availability, reduced maintenance downtime, and increased flight safety, particularly in high-altitude or snow-covered terrain. These capabilities make the aircraft well-suited for Norway’s diverse topography and the ever-present need for rapid response.
Globally, the Airbus H145 has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile and reliable platforms in the emergency medical and public service helicopter market, with more than 1,600 units in service across over 50 countries. Its low-noise profile, fuel efficiency, and modular mission design have made it a top choice for both civilian and governmental operators tasked with complex, round-the-clock missions.
This order not only strengthens Norwegian Air Ambulance’s position as a leader in European air medical services, but also reinforces Airbus’s presence in the growing rotorcraft EMS sector. As demand for advanced, flexible, and rugged platforms continues to rise, particularly in climate-exposed regions, the H145’s proven capabilities are poised to play a critical role in the future of life-saving aviation across the Nordic landscape.
