NSW Orders 151 Electric Buses to Strengthen Sydney’s Green Fleet

Post by : Meena Rani

The New South Wales (NSW) Government has taken a major step toward cleaner public transport by ordering 151 additional battery-electric buses for Sydney. This is part of the state’s ongoing plan to reduce pollution, modernize public transport, and make travel safer and more comfortable for residents.

These buses are being added to the NSW fleet as part of the Zero Emission Buses program, which is designed to gradually replace older diesel and gas buses with cleaner, electric alternatives. The program also reflects the government’s strong commitment to fighting climate change and promoting a sustainable future.

Aiming for a Cleaner and Greener Future

The order of these 151 electric buses brings the total number of electric buses ordered by the NSW Government since March 2023 to 921. This number is expected to grow further as the state aims to have around 1,700 electric buses in service across Sydney by 2028. These buses will gradually replace more than 8,000 older diesel and gas-powered buses, significantly reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality in the city.

Electric buses produce zero exhaust emissions while operating, which means they are far cleaner than traditional buses. They also provide a quieter and smoother ride for passengers, making public transport more appealing and environmentally friendly.

Supporting Local Manufacturing and Jobs

A key part of this initiative is supporting local manufacturing. The 151 new buses will be produced by Australian companies, including Custom Denning, based in St Marys in Western Sydney. More than 50% of the manufacturing content for these buses will come from Australian suppliers, ensuring that local workers and communities benefit from this investment.

This program not only helps the environment but also boosts the economy by creating jobs in manufacturing, engineering, and related sectors. By encouraging local production, the government ensures that funds invested in public transport stay within the state, supporting long-term economic growth.

Upgrading Bus Depots for Electric Buses

Introducing such a large number of electric buses requires significant upgrades to bus depots across Sydney. The Leichhardt and Kingsgrove depots are currently being converted to handle zero-emission buses. These upgrades include installing electric charging stations and modern facilities to maintain the new buses.

Additionally, a completely new electric bus depot is under construction in Macquarie Park. This depot is being built on a former factory site and will serve as a state-of-the-art facility for 165 electric buses. It will include charging stations, maintenance areas, and other modern amenities required to operate a fully electric fleet efficiently.

Tackling the Bus Driver Shortage

Alongside upgrading the fleet, the NSW Government is addressing a shortage of bus drivers, which has been a major challenge for the state. Under the previous government, more than 500 bus driver positions were vacant, causing delays and reduced service levels.

Through a focused recruitment and training campaign, the NSW Government has reduced the number of vacancies by 375, leaving 125 positions still unfilled. This effort ensures that as the electric fleet grows, there will be enough trained drivers to operate the buses safely and reliably.

Government Statement

The Minister for Transport highlighted the significance of this investment, saying that the addition of these buses will contribute to a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport system. The staged rollout of zero-emission buses is carefully planned to maximize environmental benefits, improve passenger comfort, and ensure smooth operation across the city.

Electric buses are not only better for the environment but also quieter and more comfortable for passengers. They represent a major step forward in public transport innovation, giving Sydney residents access to cleaner, greener, and more efficient travel options.

Benefits for the People of Sydney

The introduction of these electric buses is expected to benefit everyone in Sydney. Cleaner air will improve public health, reduce pollution-related diseases, and make the city a more pleasant place to live. Modern buses with electric motors provide a smoother, quieter ride, enhancing the daily travel experience for passengers.

Moreover, local manufacturing ensures that the investment supports the community by creating jobs and strengthening the local economy. This combination of environmental and economic benefits makes the Zero Emission Buses program a win-win for both people and the planet.
