OBB Unveils First Double-Deck Railjet for High-Speed Travel

Post by : Amit

June 26, 2025 | Vienna, Austria — Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has officially unveiled its first-ever double-deck Railjet train, marking a major leap in the modernization of its high-speed intercity fleet. Designed to meet growing passenger demand and offer enhanced comfort, accessibility, and sustainability, this next-generation trainset is poised to redefine long-distance rail travel across Austria and neighboring countries.

Developed in partnership with Siemens Mobility, the new Railjet marks the first time ÖBB has incorporated double-deck coaches into its high-speed fleet — a strategic move to increase passenger capacity without requiring longer trainsets or additional track slots.

Austria's national railway operator ÖBB is set to transform intercity travel with the introduction of a new generation of double-deck Railjet trains, built on Siemens' proven Viaggio Twin platform. Designed for speeds of up to 230 km/h (143 mph), the 9-car trainsets are tailored to meet the demands of Austria’s expanding electrified intercity network.

The new Railjets offer high seating capacity with two full passenger levels in most coaches, along with low-floor entrances to ensure easy access for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility. Inside, passengers will find spacious and thoughtfully designed interiors featuring ergonomic seating, quiet zones, and dedicated family compartments.

The trains are equipped with cutting-edge digital amenities such as onboard Wi-Fi, infotainment systems, and real-time journey updates. In line with ÖBB’s sustainability goals, the new fleet also features eco-friendly propulsion with regenerative braking and optimized energy efficiency. Fully compatible with ÖBB’s existing infrastructure.
the double-deck Railjets will integrate seamlessly into current Railjet service schedules, marking a major step forward in Austria’s commitment to modern, high-speed, and sustainable rail travel.

The new Railjets are built for both domestic and international operations, connecting major Austrian cities like Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Graz, as well as cross-border destinations in Germany, Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

ÖBB expects the high-capacity trains to reduce congestion on popular routes while offering a more premium experience. The introduction of these double-deck units also supports the European Union’s broader goal of shifting passengers from air and road to rail for more sustainable transport.

A standout feature of the new Railjet design is its strong emphasis on inclusivity and universal accessibility. ÖBB and Siemens have integrated several thoughtful elements to ensure that the trains can be used comfortably by all passengers. These include barrier-free access with level boarding directly from platforms, making entry and exit seamless for those using wheelchairs or with limited mobility. Inside.

the trains offer dedicated wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets, and passenger information systems that provide both visual and audible updates—catering to individuals with hearing or vision impairments. Beyond accessibility, the new Railjets are designed with diverse traveler needs in mind, offering both business and economy class seating, a full-service restaurant car, family-friendly zones, and designated compartments for bicycle storage.
This well-rounded approach reflects ÖBB’s broader commitment to a modern, multimodal rail experience that prioritizes comfort, inclusivity, and convenience for all.

The new Railjet is a key component of ÖBB’s sustainability strategy, which includes shifting more travelers to carbon-neutral rail transport. With its modern electric traction, the double-deck Railjet reduces CO₂ emissions per passenger-kilometer significantly compared to both cars and planes.

The rollout also aligns with Austria’s “Mobility Master Plan 2030,” which aims to expand rail services and improve passenger experience to meet both environmental goals and rising demand.

The new double-deck Railjet will enter service after a period of testing and certification, with commercial operations expected to begin by late 2025. ÖBB has ordered a total of 21 trainsets, with additional options likely to follow as demand grows.

The new fleet is part of ÖBB’s broader €4 billion investment in rail modernization, which also includes new night trains, improved regional services, and upgraded infrastructure.

With the launch of its first double-deck Railjet, ÖBB is not just upgrading trains — it is reimagining the future of high-speed rail in Central Europe. By combining speed, capacity, accessibility, and sustainability, the new Railjet sets a new benchmark for what modern rail travel can and should be.

As climate goals, urbanization, and intercity mobility needs accelerate, ÖBB’s investment shows how rail can lead the way in building a smarter, greener transport future for Europe.
