Patna’s Transport System Faces Challenges Urgent Reforms Needed

Post by : Armust Desk

Patna, the capital city of Bihar, is witnessing rapid urban growth. However, this growth has brought serious challenges to its transportation system. Recent studies have raised concerns about the city’s transport infrastructure, highlighting issues like congestion, over-reliance on two-wheelers, inadequate public transport, and increasing pollution levels. Experts warn that without urgent action, these problems could worsen, affecting daily life, health, and overall city development.

Over-Reliance on Two-Wheelers

One of the most striking findings of the recent studies is the overwhelming presence of two-wheelers on Patna’s roads. In the last financial year, more than 60 percent of newly registered vehicles in the city were two-wheelers. This shows a growing dependence on personal vehicles rather than public transportation.

Two-wheelers are popular because they are convenient and relatively cheap. They allow people to navigate narrow streets and save time during peak traffic hours. However, the increasing number of two-wheelers is causing serious traffic congestion, especially in central areas and on main roads. The situation is worsened by irregular traffic management and insufficient road infrastructure.

Traffic jams are now a common part of daily life in Patna. During peak hours, vehicles often move at a speed of less than 10 kilometers per hour. Long waiting times, honking, and slow traffic are taking a toll on the health and productivity of residents.

Public Transport Remains Inadequate

While private vehicles are on the rise, Patna’s public transport system is struggling to meet the needs of its residents. Studies show that the city needs over 1,200 buses to provide adequate coverage and convenience. Currently, the number of buses is far below the required level. Many residents rely on small vans, auto-rickshaws, and two-wheelers to commute, while a significant portion of the population walks or cycles due to a lack of better options.

About 64 percent of residents do not own private vehicles, making them dependent on whatever public transport is available. The limited public transport system also struggles during emergencies, festivals, or heavy rainfall, when demand surges. Experts suggest that expanding the bus fleet, improving scheduling, and introducing more reliable routes are essential steps to make public transport a viable option for more people.

Rising Pollution Levels

Another critical concern highlighted by the studies is the rise in pollution due to transport activities. Traffic congestion contributes significantly to the increase in harmful pollutants such as PM10 and PM2.5. These pollutants are dangerous for human health and are linked to respiratory diseases, heart problems, and other health issues.

The heavy use of two-wheelers and older vehicles that do not meet emission standards adds to the pollution problem. During certain times of the year, particularly winter and summer, pollution levels spike, reducing air quality and creating health hazards. Residents often complain about difficulty in breathing, eye irritation, and frequent headaches, especially those living near busy roads.

Introduction of Electric Vehicles

To address rising pollution and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, authorities and experts are promoting electric vehicles (EVs). The city has seen some progress, with EV adoption reaching over seven percent of new vehicles. While this is higher than the national average, there are still significant hurdles.

Charging infrastructure is limited, power shortages are common, and safety standards for EVs are not fully established. Despite these challenges, officials believe that a gradual shift to electric vehicles is essential to make Patna’s transport system sustainable. Promoting EVs could also reduce fuel costs for residents and improve overall air quality in the city.

Urgent Need for Smart Traffic Management

Experts recommend adopting smart traffic management systems to reduce congestion. This includes synchronized traffic lights, dedicated lanes for buses, better road signage, and the use of technology to monitor traffic in real-time. These measures could help reduce travel times, improve road safety, and make commuting more predictable.

Additionally, proper urban planning is needed. Expanding roads, building flyovers at congested junctions, and creating pedestrian-friendly zones can improve mobility. The city’s administration is urged to prioritize these infrastructure projects to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and safe passage for pedestrians.

Public Awareness and Safety

Alongside infrastructure improvements, public awareness campaigns are crucial. Residents need to follow traffic rules, avoid speeding, and reduce the use of personal vehicles whenever possible. Educating people about the benefits of using public transport, carpooling, and adopting eco-friendly alternatives can also make a significant impact.

Safety is another concern. With a large number of two-wheelers and limited traffic regulation enforcement, accidents have become frequent. Helmets, seat belts, and better road discipline should be emphasized to reduce accidents and fatalities.

Expert Recommendations

City officials, academics, and urban planning experts suggest several measures to improve Patna’s transport system:

  • Expand and modernize the public bus fleet to meet city demands.

  • Promote electric vehicles by increasing charging stations and improving safety regulations.

  • Implement smart traffic management systems using technology and data.

  • Improve road infrastructure, including flyovers, wider lanes, and pedestrian zones.

  • Launch awareness campaigns to educate residents about traffic rules and sustainable transport options.

Experts believe that if these measures are implemented promptly, Patna can reduce congestion, improve air quality, and provide a better commuting experience for all residents.

Patna is growing fast, but its transport system is struggling to keep up. The city faces challenges like two-wheeler dominance, inadequate public transport, traffic congestion, rising pollution, and limited adoption of sustainable alternatives. Studies indicate that without urgent reforms, these problems could worsen, affecting the health, safety, and daily lives of residents.
