The Philippines is witnessing one of its biggest political moments in recent years as lawmakers move closer to impeaching Vice President Sara Duterte. The vote in the House of Representatives could deeply affect the country’s political future and may even damage Duterte’s chances of running for president in 2028.
Sara Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has become one of the most powerful political figures in the country. She was elected vice president in 2022 after joining forces with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the national election campaign. At the time, the alliance between the Marcos and Duterte families appeared strong and helped both leaders win by large margins. However, relations between them later collapsed and turned into a bitter political rivalry.
The current impeachment process began after activists and civil society groups accused Duterte of several serious violations. These include alleged misuse of public funds, unexplained wealth, abuse of power, and public threats against President Marcos, his wife, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Duterte has strongly denied all accusations and says the case against her is politically motivated.
Last month, the House justice committee unanimously found “probable cause” to continue the impeachment process. That decision allowed the issue to move to a full House vote. If more than one-third of lawmakers support impeachment, the case will go to the Senate for a formal trial. If convicted there, Duterte could be removed from office and permanently banned from holding public office in the future.
The impeachment effort is especially important because Sara Duterte is widely seen as a leading candidate for the 2028 presidential election. President Marcos cannot run again because the Philippine constitution limits presidents to one six-year term. This makes the next election extremely important for the country’s political future.
Political experts say the growing conflict between the Marcos and Duterte camps has divided Philippine politics into two powerful rival groups. What started as a strong political partnership has now become a struggle for influence, power, and control over the country’s future direction.
The Duterte family has faced increasing pressure over the past year. Former President Rodrigo Duterte is already facing an international legal case linked to his deadly anti-drug campaign, which led to thousands of deaths during his presidency from 2016 to 2022. Human rights groups and international organizations have long criticized the campaign, accusing authorities of allowing unlawful killings.
Now, with Sara Duterte also under political and legal pressure, many supporters of the Duterte family believe the impeachment effort is part of a larger campaign to weaken their influence before the next election. Duterte’s legal team has argued that the impeachment complaints are defective and based on political attacks rather than solid evidence.
However, supporters of the impeachment process say the issue is about accountability and democracy. Protesters gathered outside Congress carrying banners demanding action against the vice president. Some lawmakers described the vote as a historic moment for democratic institutions in the Philippines.
The Philippines has seen impeachment battles before, but they are rare and often politically explosive. Former President Joseph Estrada faced impeachment in 2000, a crisis that eventually led to mass protests and political instability. Other senior officials have also faced impeachment over the years, though few cases resulted in conviction.
This latest case therefore carries major political importance. If the Senate eventually holds a trial, the process could dominate national politics for months and create deeper divisions inside the country. It may also affect investor confidence and public trust in political institutions.
At the same time, the situation shows how powerful political families continue to shape Philippine politics. The Marcos and Duterte families remain two of the country’s most influential dynasties. Their public conflict has now become one of the biggest stories in Southeast Asian politics.
Many ordinary Filipinos are also watching the situation closely because they are more concerned about rising prices, jobs, poverty, and public services than political battles between elites. Some citizens worry that the impeachment fight could distract leaders from solving important national problems.
Still, supporters of the impeachment process argue that public officials must be held responsible when serious accusations are raised. They believe democracy becomes stronger when even powerful leaders face legal and constitutional scrutiny.
The coming days could therefore become a turning point for the Philippines. If lawmakers approve the impeachment, the Senate trial would become one of the country’s most important political events in years. If the effort fails, Sara Duterte may emerge politically stronger ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
