Philippines Landfill Collapse in Cebu Leaves 4 Dead, Many Missing

Post by : Saif

A tragic landfill collapse in the central Philippines has claimed at least four lives, while rescue teams continue to search for dozens of missing workers. The accident has shaken the city of Cebu, where families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.

The collapse happened on Thursday at the Binaliw landfill site in Cebu City. At the time of the incident, around 110 workers were present at the landfill. When a large section of the site gave way, several facilities and structures inside the landfill were damaged, trapping many workers under debris and waste.

On Saturday, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed that the death toll had risen to four. He said that 12 injured workers were rushed to hospitals for treatment. Rescue operations were still ongoing, with teams carefully digging through the collapsed area in hopes of finding survivors.

According to the mayor, rescuers have detected signs of life in certain parts of the landfill. Because of this, authorities are using extra caution during excavation. A heavy 50-ton crane has been deployed to help remove debris safely without causing further harm to those who may still be trapped.

As of Friday, officials said 36 people were still missing. No updated number was immediately released on Saturday, but families remained at the site, refusing to give up hope. Many relatives stood near the landfill, watching rescue efforts closely and praying for good news.

One of them was Jerahmey Espinoza, whose husband has been missing since the collapse. She said her family has not received any information about his location but continues to believe that he may still be alive. Like many others, she remains hopeful as rescue teams work day and night.

The disaster has raised serious concerns about safety at landfill sites, especially those with large numbers of workers. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse once rescue operations are completed. Questions are likely to be raised about working conditions, site stability, and whether enough safety measures were in place.

For now, the focus remains on saving lives. Emergency teams continue their careful search, while the nation watches closely. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced by workers and the importance of strict safety standards in hazardous work environments.
