Rohingya Boat Sinks Near Thailand-Malaysia Border, 11 People Found Dead

Post by : Sameer Saifi

A tragic incident took place near the sea border of Thailand and Malaysia, where a boat carrying Rohingya people sank. Authorities confirmed that 11 people have died. Around 70 people were believed to be on the boat when it capsized. The search is still ongoing, and officers are working to find more survivors.

Malaysian officials said that another boat with about 230 passengers is still missing. So far, 13 survivors have been found, and most of them are Rohingya. Four bodies were recovered by Thai officials, including two children, while seven bodies were found by Malaysian rescue teams.

The Rohingya are a Muslim minority group from Myanmar. They have faced years of violence and discrimination in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Many were forced to flee their homes after a major military operation in 2017. Today, around 1.3 million Rohingya live in crowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, where life is difficult and uncertain.

Because of the harsh conditions and lack of safety, many Rohingya risk their lives by traveling across the sea in unsafe boats. They try to reach Malaysia or Indonesia, hoping for a safer and better life. However, these journeys are very dangerous. Boats are often small and overcrowded, and many people do not survive.

Malaysia’s maritime agency said that they are working together with Thailand to continue the rescue operation. Both countries are using sea and air teams to search the waters. The search efforts may continue for several days.

The United Nations Refugee Agency reported that more than 5,100 Rohingya have attempted sea voyages this year. Out of them, nearly 600 are dead or missing. This incident shows again how desperate the situation is for the Rohingya people, and how much risk they face in their search for safety and peace.

This tragedy has once again raised questions about the need for international support, safe resettlement, and long-term solutions for the Rohingya community.
