On September 19, 2025, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonia’s airspace without authorization, remaining for 12 minutes. Estonian authorities described the move as an “unprecedentedly brazen violation”, taking place near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland, about 100 km from the capital Tallinn.
Violation Details:
The Russian jets reportedly did not file flight plans, had their transponders turned off, and failed to communicate with air traffic control, raising alarm across NATO’s eastern flank.
NATO and Estonia Response:
In immediate response, NATO scrambled Italian F-35 fighter jets to intercept the aircraft. Estonia summoned Russia’s top diplomat and invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, calling for urgent consultations with alliance members.
Russia’s Position:
Russia denied any violation, claiming the jets flew over neutral waters en route to Kaliningrad. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that independent checks confirm no airspace infringement occurred.
This airspace breach is part of a pattern of recent provocations, including drone incursions into Polish airspace and joint Russia-Belarus military exercises. NATO allies have expressed concern over Russia’s aggressive maneuvers and the alliance’s preparedness to respond.
