Siemens Mobility has unveiled a new line of fireproof fiber optic cables specifically engineered for high-speed rail and urban transit systems. These next-generation cables are designed to maintain data transmission integrity even under extreme heat, significantly enhancing safety and reliability in emergency scenarios.

Certified under the EN 45545-2 European fire protection standard, the cables meet the highest levels of flame resistance, low smoke emission, and minimal toxicity — all critical requirements for modern railway applications.

In high-speed rail and metro systems, fiber optic cables form the backbone of mission-critical operations — including real-time signaling, onboard diagnostics, passenger information systems, and video surveillance. Any interruption in data flow during emergencies, such as fires or system overloads, can severely compromise safety protocols.

The newly launched Siemens cables are built to withstand high temperatures and flame exposure, ensuring continuous communication between control centers and rail systems when it matters most. This innovation is especially important for tunnel operations, where heat buildup and smoke containment are major safety challenges.

Unlike standard fiber optic cables used in commercial settings, Siemens’ new solution is tailored for the mechanical and thermal stresses of rail infrastructure. The cable sheath is constructed from halogen-free, low-smoke materials, and offers enhanced resistance to mechanical abrasion, oil, and UV exposure — extending the service life even under rugged conditions.

The cables are also lightweight and flexible, making them easier to install in tight compartments, underfloor wiring trays, and tunnel walls — all without sacrificing performance or durability.

Compliance with EN 45545-2 confirms that these cables meet rigorous criteria for limiting fire spread, reducing toxic fume release, and minimizing smoke opacity — all essential for safe evacuation and firefighting in enclosed railway environments.

A spokesperson from Siemens Mobility stated:
"Passenger safety is non-negotiable in high-speed and urban transit systems. Our fireproof fiber optic cables are designed not just to survive a fire, but to function through it — ensuring that trains remain connected to control systems in the most demanding situations."

As global rail networks expand and modernize with smarter signaling, autonomous systems, and predictive maintenance, the dependence on uninterrupted data flow continues to grow. Siemens’ new cables aim to future-proof infrastructure against both operational demands and increasingly stringent safety regulations.

Already under evaluation by several European rail operators, the cables are expected to be incorporated into upcoming new-build high-speed trainsets, tunnel retrofits, and metro modernization projects.

Siemens Mobility’s fire-resistant fiber optic cables represent a vital safety upgrade for the rail industry — offering dependable data integrity in crisis scenarios and helping rail systems stay smart, safe, and connected when it matters most.
