A Bold Step in Urban Air Mobility Infrastructure

Skyportz, an Australian-based advanced air mobility infrastructure company, has unveiled its latest vertipad design, specifically engineered for high-throughput airport environments. The design marks a significant step toward enabling seamless eVTOL integration into existing aviation hubs, ensuring airports can efficiently handle the expected surge in electric air taxi and cargo operations over the next decade.

Moving Beyond the Helipad Model

Traditional helipads are limited in their ability to accommodate frequent, rapid turnarounds for multiple aircraft. Skyportz’s refined vertipad concept addresses these limitations with a modular, scalable design capable of handling high volumes of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) traffic. The company’s engineers have incorporated automated ground-handling systems, rapid charging infrastructure, and optimized flight sequencing, all aimed at minimizing aircraft dwell time and maximizing throughput.

Designed for the Next Era of Air Mobility

The vertipad design is part of Skyportz’s broader vision to transform urban air mobility (UAM) from a futuristic concept into a practical, commercially viable transportation mode. As CEO Clem Newton-Brown explained, “If we want to see eVTOL services operate like taxis, we need infrastructure that works like a taxi rank—fast, efficient, and scalable.”

The high-throughput vertipad system includes multiple landing pads connected to an automated taxiing and docking area, where aircraft can be serviced, recharged, and prepared for their next flight without congesting the active landing area. This is a departure from current heliport setups, which often require manual repositioning and longer turnaround times.

Addressing Airport Integration Challenges

One of the biggest challenges in integrating eVTOL operations into airports is balancing their unique requirements with those of traditional fixed-wing aircraft. Airports are already busy environments, and adding high-frequency vertical operations can create congestion and safety concerns. Skyportz’s vertipad system aims to address this by designing for operational separation, enabling eVTOL flights to run concurrently with minimal interference to conventional traffic.

The vertipads are also designed with noise mitigation features, such as sound-absorbing surfaces and optimized approach paths, to minimize community impact—an important factor in winning public approval for urban eVTOL services.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency at the Core

Given that most eVTOLs will rely on battery-electric propulsion, fast-charging capability is a key part of Skyportz’s vertipad vision. The design includes integrated charging stations positioned in each parking bay, allowing aircraft to begin charging the moment they dock. Energy storage systems and on-site renewable generation are also being considered to ensure a sustainable, resilient power supply.

Skyportz is collaborating with airport authorities, energy providers, and eVTOL manufacturers to standardize charging connectors, software protocols, and operational guidelines. This will ensure that vertipads can accommodate multiple eVTOL models from different manufacturers, much like today’s airports handle a variety of aircraft types.

A Modular, Scalable Approach

The modularity of the design means that airports can start small—perhaps with just one or two pads—and expand as demand grows. This is particularly appealing for smaller regional airports and heliports that want to enter the eVTOL market without making a massive upfront investment. The vertipad modules can be assembled off-site, transported, and installed quickly, minimizing disruption to existing operations.

Global Interest in Vertipad Solutions

While Skyportz is based in Australia, its high-throughput vertipad concept is attracting international interest. Several North American and European airports have already expressed interest in pilot projects, particularly those located in cities with congested ground transport networks.

Industry analysts suggest that airport-based vertipads could become critical nodes in early eVTOL networks, connecting downtown vertiports with regional destinations. This would allow eVTOL services to bypass traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and offer a premium travel experience for business and leisure passengers alike.

Regulatory Pathways and Safety Standards

To bring the high-throughput vertipad to market, Skyportz is actively working with aviation regulators, including Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and international bodies, to develop certification frameworks. The goal is to ensure the new infrastructure meets stringent safety, operational, and environmental standards while allowing for innovation in design and operation.

This regulatory work is particularly important as different countries have varying rules on vertiport layout, fire safety, charging systems, and passenger handling. Skyportz is aiming for a global standard that would allow airports to adopt its vertipads with minimal redesign for different jurisdictions.

eVTOL Operations at Scale

Analysts predict that eVTOL traffic at major airports could reach hundreds of movements per day within a decade. Without infrastructure like Skyportz’s high-throughput vertipad, this level of activity would be difficult to manage. The company’s design is therefore seen not only as an innovation but as an essential enabler for the broader advanced air mobility ecosystem.

Newton-Brown emphasized that infrastructure must lead the way if the industry is to meet its ambitious operational targets. “The aircraft are coming—manufacturers are already in advanced certification stages. But without the right places for them to land, recharge, and take off again, the whole system will stall. Our vertipad is designed to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Industry Collaboration Will Drive Adoption

Skyportz has stated that it will license the vertipad design to airport operators, infrastructure developers, and even private property owners, rather than manufacturing the pads itself. This open approach is intended to accelerate adoption, allowing multiple stakeholders to invest in and deploy the technology.

The company is also exploring integration with booking platforms and air traffic management systems, so that vertipad availability, aircraft scheduling, and charging times are seamlessly coordinated. This digital layer will be crucial for ensuring that high-throughput operations remain safe, predictable, and profitable.

Advanced Air Mobility

Skyportz’s high-throughput vertipad represents more than just a piece of infrastructure—it’s a signal of maturity for the advanced air mobility sector. As the industry moves from prototypes to real-world deployment, the conversation is shifting from “what can we build?” to “how can we operate efficiently at scale?”

With eVTOL aircraft from companies like Joby Aviation, Archer, Lilium, and Vertical Aerospace inching closer to commercial launch, infrastructure innovators like Skyportz will play a pivotal role in determining how—and how quickly—these new transport modes can be integrated into everyday life.

As Newton-Brown succinctly put it, “The sky is not the limit—it’s the next highway. And our vertipads are the on-ramps.”
