Sri Lanka has taken control of an Iranian naval supply ship after evacuating its sailors during an incident that occurred near the island nation’s waters. The operation was carried out by the Sri Lankan Navy after the vessel reported difficulties while operating in the Indian Ocean, prompting authorities to intervene to ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel.

The ship, identified as IRIS Bushehr, is a large naval logistics vessel used to support long-distance operations at sea. It had been sailing through regional waters when it encountered technical challenges that required assistance from nearby maritime authorities.

Sri Lankan naval units responded quickly to the situation, boarding the ship and safely evacuating the sailors on board. The crew members were transported to Sri Lanka, where they received medical checks and were temporarily accommodated under the supervision of authorities.

Officials emphasized that the evacuation was conducted as a precautionary measure to protect the lives of the sailors and to prevent further complications while the vessel remained in the area. The sailors included naval personnel and trainees who were part of the ship’s operational deployment. The Sri Lankan Navy coordinated closely with maritime authorities during the operation to ensure that the evacuation was conducted smoothly and without risk to the crew.

Following the evacuation, Sri Lanka assumed temporary control of the Iranian supply ship. Naval personnel secured the vessel and began preparations to move it to a safer location where it can be monitored and maintained until further arrangements are made.

Authorities stated that the decision to take control of the ship was necessary to prevent the vessel from drifting or becoming a navigational hazard in one of the world’s busiest maritime regions.

Sri Lanka’s navy has experience managing such maritime situations and has previously assisted foreign vessels that encountered problems while passing through nearby waters.

The incident occurred in the busy shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean, a region that plays a crucial role in global trade and maritime transportation. Thousands of commercial vessels pass through these routes each year, making safety and stability in the region a major priority for coastal nations.

Sri Lanka occupies a strategically important position along these sea lanes, which is why the country often plays a key role in maritime rescue and security operations.

By responding quickly to the situation, Sri Lankan authorities ensured that both the vessel and its crew were protected while maintaining safety along the shipping routes.

Sri Lankan officials are now coordinating with Iranian authorities regarding the next steps for the ship and its crew. Diplomatic communication is expected to determine how the vessel will eventually be returned and how the sailors will travel back to their home country.

In the meantime, the Sri Lankan Navy will continue to monitor the vessel and maintain security around it while it remains under the country’s control.

The situation highlights the role of regional navies in responding to maritime emergencies and supporting international cooperation at sea, particularly in strategically important waters like the Indian Ocean.
